Joanne Horn, the director and owner of Joanne Reagan Dance Studios, Inc. in Cold Spring, begins her 46th year of teaching dance to second generations of students. It is the 45th year for the Joanne Reagan Dance Studios. Ms. Horn’s first year of teaching was with her foundation teacher, Jerry Love Barber.
Ms. Horn is proud of the diversity the JRD studios offer students ages 2 to 72. The roster of classes includes toddler and preschool combination classes. Other classes for all ages 5 and up include classical ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, tap, Broadway Theatre and gymnastics. This year an exclusive “hip hop” class will be offered for boys. Ms. Reagan Horn says that her studio affords the very serious student the caliber of classes they need as a prerequisite for college and the professional stage. It also affords classes for the student who wants simply to have the experience of dance in any of the various areas offered.
Ms. Horn is assisted in the direction of the studio by Anne Reagan. Ms. Reagan grew up in the dance studio since her toddler years, when Mom (Joanne Reagan Horn) would bring her to the studio and started her in a children’s combination class. Anne has since graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. After graduation from AMDA, she began an 8 year performance career in Atlantic City and then continued on to Las Vegas. In Vegas she performed for Debbie Reynolds, Sands, Martin and Rossi, MGM Grand and Legends in Concert (of which she was line captain for 3 years). She has been teaching with her mother for 13 years.
The Reagan Studio also hails five performing companies ranging in ages from 5 to 18. These companies perform annually in local parades and various other venues. In April of 2014, they will perform for the 10th time at Walt Disney World. In 2010, many students of the companies were featured dancers in the movie “Standing Ovation”. Ms. Horn and Anne Reagan were also choreographers for the movie. Most recently, several students represented the studio in Sea Isle City’s summer series of “Sea Isle’s Got Talent”. They were preliminary winners and went on to the finals to place 2nd out of 22 finalists.
The studio also features guest teachers and guest classes. This October, Ellie Sciarra will be featured for a weekend of a tap intensive doing the work of legendary tap dancer and choreographer, Dr. Henry LeTang.
Joanne Reagan Horn says that the rewards of teaching dance are that it teaches students not only the technique and vocabulary of dance, but also how to think and valuable life lessons. The Reagan philosophy and mission statement is building character, discipline, and responsibility through the creative and performing arts.
Other teachers and staff at the Reagan Studio are Robin Drechen, Joanne McCullough, Jennifer Fox, Kelly Kennedy, Amanda Peck, Melissa Rossi, Rosie Price, Kim Brand and Faith Chabot.
Registration for the 2013-2014 class year takes place August 27, 28, and 29, from 10AM-6PM. Classes begin the week of September 9, 2014. For information call 884-2600 or 861-5991 or email joannereagandance@yahoo.com
