Introducing Stellar Mojo

By Michelle Riggins

Singing party and dance hits, college rock and hip-hop, oldies and sometimes jazz, StellarMojo has you and your friends dancing the night away at some of the hottest spots in the county. You may know them well enough to say hello or to call them by their first names. You might have even gone to school with them. But how well do you really know the members of StellarMojo? What different personalities lie behind all of that talent? Which two members have been with the band the longest and whose favorite part of making music is just to put a smile on someone’s face? These are six, seven including a sound engineer, very different men who have a real passion for what they do.
StellarMojo has been together for over three years, beginning in January 2008 with only two musicians. Dedicated artist John King, aka “Kinger”, started the band. King is a 29-year-old singer and rhythm guitarist for StellarMojo who had a dream and made it happen. He takes pleasure in giving to others and strives to make a difference in as many peoples’ lives as he can. He bases his life around family and music and feels truly blessed for always having both to rely on.
Mike Dempsey, age 35, is the drummer and percussionist for StellarMojo. He has been practicing his talent since he was a sophomore at Lower Cape May Regional. The second member to join this band, he is amazed at the growth in the amount of talent as well as people that have been added to the group. His favorite parts of being a performer are the excitement of being able to entertain large groups of people as well as meeting people and making new friends! He is a family man as well and loves to eat, shop and always dresses to impress.
Jon Katity, has been singing his entire life and playing guitar since he was only twelve. The third member to join StellarMojo, he is a singer and guitarist and has been with the band for 1 ½ years. His favorite parts of being a musician are using something he loves to make someone else happy, putting a unique twist on mash-ups, and creating extended jazz-infused jams with the band. Katity likes party music and anything that makes people want to get up and dance!
The fourth addition to the band is Jerry Turner, who comes all the way from Asheville, North Carolina. He has been playing the keyboard since he was 17 years old and has been with StellarMojo for just over a year. He feels that StellarMojo is successful at what they do because the crowd can hear their favorite songs played by a live band that make each one of their performances personal and fun. His favorite song to play is Mumford & Sons, “The Cave.”
The next addition to the group was Ryan Terry, who plays lead guitar or “geetar” as he calls it. He has been playing guitar for 20 years. His favorite part of performing is traveling and meeting new people. He studied music at Drexel University, which is his passion but also works as a project manager in contracting. It seems that he is the comedian of the group.
The last member of the band is Joe Blong who plays the bass. He has performed at numerous Jazz and Blues Festivals and also plays bass for National Recording artist Frank Bey. Blong has been playing bass for 25 years and loves what he does. His favorite song to perform with StellarMojo is “Thriller.”
Finally, special thanks should be made to the group’s recent addition: 33-year-old sound engineer, Joe Hocker from Erma!
Check StellarMojo out this summer at a variety of venues like Westy’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood, Lighthouse Pointe in Wildwood, Sand Barrens in Swainton and Goodnight Irene’s where Mike Dempsey plays with DVDJ Mollo.
