CAPE MAY — Celebrate Halloween at the Nature Center of Cape May with an “NJAS Autumn Weekend Open House” and a “Creepy Crawly Halloween” for the kids.
“Creepy Crawly Halloween” will take place Sat., Oct. 30, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. According to Senior Naturalist Kim Hannum, “We’ll be going on a Halloween hike around the nature center grounds to search for creepy crawly insects like spiders and worms. After our hike, we’ll head into the classroom to meet “Scales,” our resident reptile, and learn about creatures of the night like bats and owls.”
The highlight of the event, according to Hannum? “We’ll even dissect an owl pellet and reconstruct the skeleton of the owl’s last meal!”
The fee for “Creepy Crawly Halloween” is $10, reduced to $8 for New Jersey Audubon members. This program will fill quickly. To save your child’s spot, call the nature center at 609-898-8848. Halloween costumes are encouraged.
The nature center will also host a free open house on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29 and 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, for New Jersey Audubon’s Autumn Weekend.
Visitors are invited to explore the Trucksess Welcome Center’s exhibits and nature store, to meander through the children’s garden and see the stunning views of Cape May Harbor and East Cape May from the second-story deck and three-story observation tower.
Explore the classrooms and environmental education campus, and look for Monarch, Common Buckeye and Red Admiral butterflies in our wildlife-friendly gardens. Light refreshments will be served throughout the open house weekend.
