CAPE MAY – Hundreds of soldiers and sailors were needlessly killed and plans for the D-Day landings were potentially compromised in a government cover-up that lasted decades. The Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower, a group under the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) umbrella, expose “The Exercise Tiger Disaster and Cover-up” during the group’s third public program on Saturday, April 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave.
On April 28, 1944 in the waters off the English coast, a top secret naval operation was preparing U.S. Army and Naval forces for the June 6th D-Day Invasion when a series of German torpedo boats suddenly attacked, resulting in the death of more than 700 soldiers and sailors. The tragedy, now known as “The Exercise Tiger Disaster,” was kept secret for 30 years. Hear about the disaster and cover-up in detail from Tom Glynn, Richard Baker, and Ed Kent, local World War II veterans who lived through it. A video on the disaster will also be shown during the program.
Admission is free for “Friends” members and $5 for the public. Non-members who join the group at the meeting will get free admission to this program as well as future “Friends” events. Those who become “Friends” members before Dec. 31, 2011, will be permanently listed among the Charter Members at the World War II Lookout Tower. Adults attending are asked to bring a young person with them so the group can advance one of its main goals, which is developing in the younger generation an understanding and appreciation of not only Cape May’s important role in World War II, but of the traits of patriotism, loyalty, and self-sacrifice so characteristic of the people of these war years. Upcoming Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower events will be previewed and light refreshments will be served at the program.
