MILLVILLE – The Gallery of Fine Craft at WheatonArts presents, “Reflections On Nature,” a new solo exhibition of oil and watercolor paintings by artist Glenn Rudderow. Over forty paintings reflect his passion for the beauty of the local southern New Jersey landscape and its surrounding communities. The show opens Aug. 31 and continues through Oct. 6.
Rudderow explains, “My paintings reflect the cycle of the seasons, the forever changing light, the harmonies sung by plants, animals and insects in their interactions with water, land and air. I try to capture the feelings that suggest the lives and spirits of the people that move through these harmonies. It is my desire to create statements which convey the passion and obsession I have for these things. To paraphrase N.C. Wyeth, ‘one can only paint that which one knows more than intimately, one has to know it spiritually.’ It is my goal as an artist to observe these things and create paintings and images which enable the viewer to communicate, experience and live these same feelings.”
During his time in Gandy’s Beach, NJ, a small town along the Delaware River, Rudderow immersed himself in the wetland environment that was his subject matter. Later, in the historic village of Dividing Creek, NJ, he continued his study of the wetlands and adjacent woodlands. His vision was also drawn to the old farmhouses, farmlands, churches, marshes and wetlands found in western Cumberland and Salem Rudderow’s national exhibitions include: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA (PAFA); National Academy of Design, NY; American Watercolor Society, NY; Noyes Museum, Oceanville, NJ; Springfield Museum of Art, MO; Delaware Art Museum, DE; Butler Institute of Art, OH; Arnot Museum, NY; Woodmere Art Museum, PA; John Pence Gallery, San Francisco, CA; and the Sherry French Gallery, NY. Among his awards are: New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship, American Watercolor Society Award for Excellence, Watercolor USA Award for Excellence, Springfield Art Museum; Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Post Award; and the National Academy of Design Award for Outstanding Portraiture.
Rudderow was one of four artists featured in a New Jersey Network (NJN) documentary entitled, “Bayshore Artists, A Sense of Place,” released in October 2001. In November 2005, NJN released the Emmy award winning film, “Reflections of a Bayshore Artist: Glenn Rudderow.” It was shown on over 100 PBS stations across the U.S.
The Gallery will host a “Meet the Artist” reception Sept. 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. and an “Artist Talk” on Sept. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information about the artist visit glennrudderow.com.
