OCEAN CITY – “The hardest thing in the world is to start an orchestra and the next hardest to stop it”, that bit of wisdom was uttered by Hans Richter more then a century ago, but he might very well have been speaking about the Glenn Miller Orchestra, which appears at the Ocean City New Jersey Music Pier on Friday, July 22 at 8 p.m..
The first orchestra Glenn Miller form didn’t make it at all. It was a total and absolute failure. But Glenn knew what he wanted, held to that dedication and relentlessly worked to succeed. He launched his second band in March of 1938, and unlike the first band, it became an enormous success. And it has been a “hit” ever since.
The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all of the dance band landers back in the Swing era of the 1930’s and 40’s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts, and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilions built and sustained the momentum of popularity. In fact, its recording of Chattanooga Choo-Choo earned the first Gold Record ever awarded to a performing artist. The theme of Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was the beautiful Moonlight Serenade, and its still the signature tune of the Glenn Miller Orchestra today. Glenn Miller originally wrote the music of the song himself as a an exercise for a course in arranging.
Tickets for the Glenn Miller Orchestra are now on sale and all seats are reserved and are priced at $ 25 advance and $30 on the day of show. Tickets can be purchased at the Ocean City Music Pier Box Office or on line at www.brownpapertickets.com or by phone at 1 800-838-3006.
