CAPE MAY — Please join the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge on Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. as they celebrate the reopening of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge Beach. This half-mile section of Refuge beach is closed to visitors each year from May 1 until Oct. 1 to provide a safe haven for nesting, feeding and migrating shorebirds.
The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a free Sat. morning family nature walk. On this date, the Wildlife Refuge sponsors a special walk led by Dr. Ralph Boerner. Dr. Boerner is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at Ohio State University and is now a resident of Cape May Beach. Dr. Boerner will focus his beach walk on the amazing and sometimes troublesome ghost crabs and will explore the complexity of their burrows.
Dr Boerner’s informative walk will be followed by a Beach and Trail Cleanup Day from 10 a.m. – noon. The Wildlife Refuge always appreciates the efforts of their volunteers, and your help makes the Refuge a special place for people and wildlife! Bring gloves, sunscreen and water. If you are coming to help with trail maintenance, it would be helpful (but not mandatory) if you could bring hedge clippers, a weed whacker, pruning saw (no chain saw, please), or other tools for trimming small tree limbs, vines, etc.
Please meet at the Visitors Contact Station at Two Mile Beach at 12001 Pacific Ave (Ocean Dr), Wildwood Crest, near the former Coast Guard Loran Station. For more information or directions, please call 609-513-9349. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.
Sponsored by Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge.
