The Barbone Street Jazz Band consists of world-class jazz musicians. Their 60-plus year old average age is worn as a badge of honor. During their formative years, jazz was the rage in clubs all over the country. Dixieland, New Orleans Jazz, Swing and Hot Dance music flourished during the 1940s and 50s. They were the right age to see and hear this type of music live and in many cases, played it along side some of the greatest jazz legends of the 20th century.
During these years, jazz took many forms as individual styles developed. Barbone Street musicians working with each other in many different bands were united by a common goal: A desire to explore the roots of jazz and traditional jazz modernized by their own inventiveness. Barbone Street was formed several years ago with the goal of blending their own individual styles into a unique, energetic, easily recognized band sound.
A Rehoboth, De jazz club owner says, “It is simply amazing how [their] music crosses all age groups. It is clearly a demonstration of the respect for the music and the musicians in Barbone St. [They] have done a great thing.” And the Jazz Concert Review writes, “Barbone Street was superb! Great music played in a bright, colorful, original and playful style that is the hallmark of this marvelous band.”
The bands members have played with many jazz greats such as Coleman Hawkins, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Max Roach and also perform in orchestras and clubs in and around the Philadelphia area. Be sure not to miss this exciting concert!
