SEA ISLE CITY – March 19, the members of Saint Joseph Catholic Church celebrated the annual Feast of Saint Joseph with a special mass, an entertaining play, and a hearty pot-luck meal.
The mass, led by Pastor Rev. Joseph Perreault and Deacon Joseph Murphy, took place inside the parish’s new church, which was consecrated in Dec. 2011. Afterwards, those in attendance processed to the parish auditorium, where a group of students from Bishop McHugh Regional School and the parish’s religious-education program staged a play about the life of their patron saint. The play combined history, humor and pop-culture in a manner that delighted every member of the audience.
Following a standing ovation for the players, everyone enjoyed a pot-luck dinner in the auditorium, which featured a staggering variety of homemade casseroles, hams, pasta-dishes, salads and deserts. The dinner was organized and served by the Catholic Daughters and other volunteers from the parish.
According to Catholic Daughter Regent Vera McQuillen, the celebration had a tremendous turnout. “This year approximately 250 people attended, which is even more than our last Feast of Saint Joseph celebration in 2010. Some people came from other parishes and towns, simply because they wanted to honor Saint Joseph and be part of the celebration – and everyone loved it! We are very fortunate to have such an active parish.”
For organizer Donna Hadfield, it was a blessing to see so many people enjoy an evening of prayer and fellowship. “This was a parish event that brought people together from every part of our church and from each of our different ministries. It was all about Saint Joseph – and we are all part Saint Joseph, from young to old, every one of us.”
