NORTH WILDWOOD — Mummers Brigade Weekend will come to this city June 11-12. After the recent passing of one of their own, Joe Schubert, the Fancy Brigade will perform this year in his honor.
His long-time friend Bill Burke Jr. wrote: “Once in a while, a special person comes along and changes history. Joe Schubert is one of those people.
“As a captain, drillmaster and founder of the Philadelphia Mummers Choir, Joe has left his mark on the Mummers tradition for over four decades. “
“Over his 10 years as Captain of the Golden Crown Fancy Brigade, Joe led the black and gold to their first top prize in the club’s history with the imaginary theme “Dancing through the Seasons.”
Affectionately known as the “Dancing Captain,” Joe out-danced them all and ultimately changed the way Captains performed.
Upon retiring as captain, Joe went on to be the Drill Master for the Downtowners Fancy Brigade and the one-time curator of the Mummers Museum.
Above all, Joe’s passion and most outstanding accomplishment was organizing and directing the Philadelphia Mummers Choir.
Whether performing for the Pope in Rome, singing the National Anthem at the Phillies game or North Wildwood, or bringing cheer from club to club on Hat Day, Joe and the Mummers Choir have brought joyfulness to many.
Schubert was elected to the Fancy Brigade Hall of Fame on April 29, 2010.
