GREENFIELD — The autumn air was Winesap crisp with a Golden Delicious sun hanging in the sky at the historic John Gandy farmstead for the 11th annual Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township (HPSUT) Apple Fest.
Traditional craftspeople demonstrated their talents with spinning, blacksmithing, woodcarving and decoy making. The day also offered participants a chance to see flint and musket demonstrations as well as a beekeeper. Even Johnny Appleseed made an appearance to read to children and to help judge the apple pie baking contest.
Blacksmith Bill Banks of Eldora gave a hands-on demonstration to 11-year-old Fritz Raring-Hand of Goshen.
“I’m making a hook for my dad,” said Raring-Hand as he put a piece of metal into the blazing forge.
In addition to crafts, festival-goers were offered a chance to sample apple butter, apple cobbler and apple cider along with grilled hot dogs and bratwursts.
According to HPSUT president Carol Williams, the event helps to raise money for the organization as well as to provide a glimpse into life on a 19th century farm.
