CAPE MAY – “I sometimes think women’ll go so far that the great battle of the future will be between the sexes for supremacy!” exclaims Dr. Remington in Rachel Crothers’ 1920 Broadway hit “He and She.”
The Battle of the Sexes! Let the games begin at the Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company’s 2011 Mainstage Production Season. First up, see the husband-and-wife team of Ann and Tom Herford duke it out in “He and She.” Come and see why “The Newark Star-Ledger” awarded it “The Best Play of the New Jersey Season” when ELTC first produced it in 1997.
“He and She,” from June 15- July 23, is about a couple who compete for the same artistic prize at a time when their teenage daughter needs guidance. The cast for this provocative comedy/drama includes ELTC veterans Tom Byrn, Emily Cheney, John Cameron Weber, and Gayle Stahlhuth, who also directs, and new to ELTC, Molly O’Neill, Davy Holyoak, Ashley Kowzun, and Grace Wright.
Next up is “The World of Dorothy Parker,” running from July 27- Sept. 3. This world premiere, based on the writings of the famous Algonquin Round Table wit, is adapted by Gayle Stahlhuth. Suzanne Dawson, Tiffany-Leigh Moskow, Drew Seltzer, and John Cameron Weber bring “A Telephone Call,” “Here We Are,” “The Lovely Leave,” and other famous tales to life.
On Sept. 16 and 17, “Helpful Hints” returns. Based on “Putnam’s Household Handbook” written by Mae Savell Croy, it is adapted and performed by Susan Tischler and directed by Karen Case Cook. Join Mrs. Croy as she explains how to be efficient in the home so more time can be spent at suffrage rallies. The stage manager, Mr. Wilcox, is on hand to see that she stays on track with her topics.
“Dulcy,” a 1921 screwball comedy by Pulitzer Prize-winners George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly runs for four weeks only, from Sept. 21-Oct. 15. In trying to help her husband, Dulcy alienates his boss and complicates matters with her other weekend guests. Kaufman’s daughter, Anne, is eager to return to Cape May for another Q&A, and ELTC is thrilled to be producing another Kaufman play! The cast includes ELTC favorites Erin Callahan, Suzanne Dawson, Mark Edward Lang, Megan McDermott, Alison J. Murphy, Thomas Raniszewski, Drew Seltzer, Fred Velde, and Gayle Stahlhuth, who also directs. Making their 2011 debut with ELTC are Dave Holyoak and Larry Daggett.
On Nov. 4 and 5, ELTC presents “Sherlock Holmes’ Adventure of the Norwood Builder,” performed in the style of a 1930’s NBC radio show. All of the evidence points to a young lawyer as the murderer. But is he being set-up, or is he the murderer after all? It’s an exciting puzzle fit for Holmes and Watson.
For the holidays, from November 25 through December 10, it’s “Christmas Presents from the Past,” classic American Christmas stories by Louisa May Alcott, O. Henry, and Mark Twain, told in storytelling fashion. A treat for the whole family!
Opening night is always the first Wednesday of each production, with after-show parties at one of Cape May’s fine restaurants, at no extra cost.
Season Tickets are available through June 30 for $100.00. The recipient can choose what days to attend – and even bring friends! As usual, there are five separate tickets in the Season Ticket packet, so individual tickets may actually be given to others for their use. Regular prices are $30 for general admission; $25 for seniors (62 +); and $15 for full-time students. To encourage whole families to attend, anyone age 12 and under is still free. ELTC is in residence at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes St., Cape May. All tickets may be purchased at the box office; by sending a check to ELTC’s office at 121 Fourth Ave., West Cape May, NJ 08204; or online through ELTC’s web site at www.eastlynnetheater.org.
