CAPE MAY – View historic 19th Century and early 20th Century lighthouses that aided ships sailing the treacherous mid-channel of Delaware Bay aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher during the final three Delaware Bay Lighthouse Adventures of 2011 on Sat. Sept. 24 and Fri., Oct. 14.
Co-sponsored by the Cape May Whale Watcher and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC), these voyages of discovery on the Delaware Bay take you past nine mostly “water access only” Delaware Bay lighthouses. Most of these lighthouses are still in operation today, but many of them stand on pedestals surrounded by water and are not visible from land.
The cruises on Aug. 27 and Sept. 24 will feature the following lighthouses: Cape May Lighthouse, Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse, Inner Breakwater, Outer Breakwater, Fourteen Foot Bank Lighthouse, Cross Ledge Lighthouse, Miah Maull Shoal Lighthouse, Elbow of Cross Ledge Lighthouse and Ship John Shoal Lighthouse.
Each cruise not only offers superb lighthouse viewing and photo opportunities, but also includes narration on Delaware Bay lore and legend, and information on fishing, spawning grounds and more. This cruise includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch. A cash bar is available. The Cape May Whale Watcher sails from the Miss Chris Marina, Second Avenue and Wilson Drive.
The cruises on Saturdays, Aug. 27 and Sept. 24 are 7-hours and are $99 per person. The cruise on Friday, Oct. 14 is done in conjunction with the Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey weekend and is 5-hours long and costs $85 per person (Inner Breakwater and Outer Breakwater lighthouses are not included on this cruise).
Seating is limited to 175 passengers. If a cruise is not sold out in advance, the remaining tickets will be sold at the dock 30 minutes before departure. Free parking is available at the marina.
The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Cape May’s heritage. MAC also fosters the performing arts. MAC membership is open to all.
