COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Fare Free Transportation Department will hold its annual “Roadeo” on April 14, 2015 from 8 a.m. until Noon at the Cape May County Airport, Breakwater Road, Erma, New Jersey.
According to Freeholder E. Marie Hayes, who oversees the department, this is the department’s spring training day dubbed “The Roadeo” that tests drivers in their everyday activities. Vehicle Pre-trip, Wheelchair Securement and an Obstacle Course are some of the activities that test their skills. Also, participants are subjected to a written exam that evaluates their knowledge of Federal ADA regulations, rules of the road and passenger service standards.
The local competition is modeled after state and national events with the winners of the county’s event going on to compete at the state level. This year, the state competition will take place on May 2, 2015 at Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey. In the past, Cape May County drivers have gone on to win at both the State and National levels. Freeholder Hayes said, “Through the years, Fare Free drivers have shown that they are the best of the best at what they do. These competitions highlight their talent and expertise.”
Fare Free Transportation has been serving Cape May County residents for more than forty years. The department operates twenty-six runs each day plus delivers all the meals for the county’s Meals On Wheels program. Annually, Fare Free Transportation takes approximately 140,000 trips (not including shopping trips).
