County 4-H Offers October Fall Fest

COURT HOUSE – The focus is on 4-H as the Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program celebrates National 4-H Week, Oct. 6 – 13. A host of October programs offer free family fun, honor volunteers and offer hands-on educational opportunities to Cape May County youth. On Oct. 6 the 4-H Fall Halloween Fun Horse Show and Fun Fest will be held at the 4-H Fairgrounds from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Fairgrounds are located at 355 Courthouse – S. Dennis Road in Cape May Courthouse. Free hands-on activities and crafts offered by 4-H Club Leaders and Rutgers Master Gardeners begin on Sunday starting at 2:00 p.m.
“We need more than one week to celebrate,” laughs County Agent Julie Karavan “Our calendar is full thanks to the enthusiasm of our volunteers. Our volunteers are growing 4-H… and 4-H is growing GREAT kids in Cape May County. We are excited to add hands-on activities and crafts to our annual Horse Show, engage Rutgers Master Gardeners in volunteering in the 4-H program, offer new programs in conjunction with volunteers and faculty and recognize the many contributions of our RCE volunteers.”
Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County faculty will honor the contributions of RCE community volunteers on Oct. 27 with a Farm to Table Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast at Willow Creek Winery in West Cape May. Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the RCE Office, 355 Courthouse-S.Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. The breakfast will feature farm fresh products, including breakfast meats purchased at the 2013 Livestock Auction and donated to the event by Cape May County Freeholders Kristine Gabor and Will Morey. On Oct. 28, veteran 4-H club leader Gayle Crookston and the Kitchen Phanatics 4-H Club will sponsor a Creative Foods Workshop. Featuring presentations by a local chef, volunteers and RCE faculty, the workshop will cover nutrition, kitchen skills and table setting. Registration fee for the workshop is $5.00. The Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program serves young people in kindergarten through one year out of high school. Programs include in-school and after school clubs, camps, workshops, regional and national trips and special events. 4-H clubs are led by trained, adult volunteers and offer youth community service opportunities, the chance to explore an area of interest while making new friends and gaining public speaking and record keeping experience. 4-H members enjoy recognition for their efforts and achievements at the annual 4-H Fair and County Awards Night.
