COURT HOUSE – More than 6 million young people across the country will celebrate National 4-H Week, an annual celebration of 4-H, during the week of Oct. 5-11. Cape May County 4-H will kick off National 4-H Week with a Haunted Horse Show and Fall Open House Oct. 5.
4-H club members and leaders invite the public to join them for a showcase of 4-H clubs and programs at the Coover Livestock Pavilion, located at the 4-H fairgrounds.
The day will begin with a Halloween-themed Haunted Horse Show at 11 a.m. which is open to all participants in 12th grade and under. Costumed youth and horses will compete for prizes in fun classes such as a costume contest, “Bribe Your Horse Haunted Obstacle Course,” the “Headless Horseman’s Hideout,” “Deviled Egg and Spoon Relay,” the “Team Witches’ Brew Relay Race,” the “Poisonous Carrot Barrels,” and the “Hairy Scairy,” a race through the ghostly poles and over the jumps of oblivion. The public is invited to watch and enjoy this amusing event.
The day continues with a Fall Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. for members of the public to explore the wide variety of 4-H clubs and find out how they can join or volunteer their time. Local clubs include teen leadership, herpetology, equestrian, fishing, gardening, sewing, culinary arts, archery and even a horseless horse club. Youth from the livestock clubs will also be on hand to show off their animals and answer questions about membership.
Activities will also include fall crafts like pumpkin decorating and scarecrow making as well as games, activities and hay rides. Members of the 4-H Foundation will be cooking up delicious lunch items at a nominal fee.
National 4-H week demonstrates to the members of the public the number of great things that 4-H offers young people and highlights 4-H youth and adult volunteers who work each day to make a positive impact on the community.
The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. 4-H educational programs are offered to all youth grades K – 13 on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, natural origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
If You Go: Both the horse show and the open house are open to the public. The Haunted Horse Show starts at 11 a.m. and Fall Open House runs from 1 until 4 p.m. at the Coover Livestock Pavilion at the rear of the 4-H fairgrounds located at 355 Court House – South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.
