CAPE MAY – Cape May Stage puts the spotlight on fostering the careers of young theatre artists. July 21 at 2:00 p.m., the Resident Intern Company of Cape May Stage presents John Patrick Shanley’s Savage in Limbo. Taking place in a seedy neighborhood bar in the Bronx, a group of dejected individuals seeks relief from the tedium of everyday life. Riddled with dry humor and quick wit, Shanley’s work depicts the desperation and loneliness of these characters as they seek to forge meaningful connections in an often-meaningless world.
Consisting of six recent college graduates with different specialties in the theatre arts, the Resident Intern Company represents Cape May Stage’s mission to further arts education in non-traditional ways. Fully immersive and hands-on, this program affords these young professionals the opportunity to gain real experience at a professional, Equity theatre. This production of Savage in Limbo represents one of their most intensive undertakings, as they use their collective talents to create each facet of the production. Perhaps the biggest role is taken on by Bridget Grace Sheaff, directing and dramaturgy intern, who in addition to selecting the work, helms this production as its director.
A group of young actors, known as ‘emerging artists’, assists the Resident Intern Company in realizing Shanley’s work. Sheaff is excited about the possibilities of their collaboration stating, “This production gives both the interns and actors the chance to demonstrate what the newest generation of theatre artists is bringing to the American theatre scene.” This potential has already been exhibited during a night of staged readings celebrating Pride Month, also directed and compiled by Sheaff.
