CAPE MAY — Cape May Stage, in partnership with the Cape May Film Society, is proud to present a screening of the documentary The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights. Focusing on Whitney Young’s involvement in the civil rights movement, this screening ties in to Cape May Stage’s mainstage production of The Mountaintop – focusing on another civil rights leader: Martin Luther King, Jr.
Called “the inside man of the black revolution,” Whitney Young is considered to be one of the most controversial leaders of the civil rights era. Directly dealing with the powerful Fortune 500 companies and politicians, Young was able to make great strides for change. As an advisor to Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, Young was able to guide the Oval Office along the path towards historic change. Maligned by some for his methods, Young worked to change the established powers in a way no one else could – from within.
After the screening, a special Q&A will be hosted by Marcia Young-Cantarella, one of Young’s daughters. She will discuss her father’s work to open the doors of equal opportunity, the role he played in influencing public policy and how he came from growing up in rural Kentucky to becoming the Executive Director of the National Urban League.
The screening of The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights will take place at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse located on the corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets on May 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets are ‘pay-what-you-wish’.
