CAPE MAY — Cape May Stage’s Artistic Director Roy Steinberg announces his plans for the Stage’s upcoming 2011 theatre season along with some money-saving changes to the theatre’s subscription packages.
The 2011 season will continue this tradition of excellence. Steinberg presents Cape May Stage’s strongest programming yet, with new works and returning favorites, a jam-packed Second Stage Series calendar full of celebrity appearances, and the unsurpassed production components patrons have grown to expect. With plenty of laughs, plus a few tears, audiences will want to see every show in this spectacular season.
Cape May Stage’s 2011 theatre schedule features the following six productions:
“Say Goodnight Gracie” by Rupert Holmes,May 11–June 18, 2011: One of our biggest hits ever is back by popular demand! Adapted from the reminiscences of George Burns, the multimedia tour-de-force presentation traces the comedian’s life from his childhood to his early career in vaudeville to his momentous meeting and subsequent personal and professional relationships with wife, Gracie Allen.
“The Understudy” by Theresa Rebeck: June 22 – July 30, 2011. The Understudy is the latest comedy from Pulitzer Prize nominee Theresa Rebeck (Omnium Gatherum, Bad Dates, Mauritius). When a smug Hollywood action star lands a prestigious role in Franz Kafka’s newly discovered play on Broadway, things couldn’t be better…until he meets his understudy. Can a lovesick, charmingly ditzy stage manager prevent a battle royale from developing between the two rival actors? The Understudy places the backstage friction of a frenzied rehearsal center stage with vivacious satire and Kafkaesque theatrics.
“Steel Magnolias” By Robert Harling: Aug. 3 – Sept. 10, 2011. There’s no such thing as a bad hair day at Truvy’s hair salon! Many things beside hair get done as Truvy and company come together to share their secrets, fears, and love for one another while engaging the audience in hysterical and neighborly gossip. Filled with humor and heartbreak, these ‘Steel Magnolias’ make us laugh and cry as the realities of their lives and friendships unfold.
“The Woolgatherer” by William Mastrosimone: Sept. 14–Oct. 22, 2011: South Philadelphia comes ‘down the shore’ in William Mastrosimone’s debut work. The Woolgatherer, now rewritten for this premiere, is the story about an unlikely couple looking for love in a world gone mad. Rose, a shy cashier prone to daydreaming, meets Cliff, a rough-edge trucker with a solitary life. Can a candy counter girl and foul-mouthed truck driver find love in South Philly? At turns funny and poignant, this gripping play answers the question with humor, humanity and just a touch of crazy.
“Red” by John Logan (pending rights):Oct. 26- Nov. 19. Master American expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his assistant, Ken. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, Red is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
‘This Wonderful Life” by Steve Murray | Conceived by Mark Setlock: Nov. 25- Dec. 31, 2011: Share the hope and humor of Frank Capra’s adored Christmas film It’s A Wonderful Life in this delightful stage adaptation. This one-man tour de force delivers a witty and moving story that is sure to capture your heart and captivate your spirit. One amazing actor portrays George Bailey, Clarence the Angel, Mary, Old Man Potter, and twenty more of Bedford Falls’ finest citizens. George comes to realize that life really is worth living and that the actions of one person do make a difference in the world.
Cape May Stage continues to offer the popular “Opening Night Series” premium package, which includes admission to six shows, reserved seating, and a discount to any Broadway Series show, all for only $255.
Adults can purchase a “Standard Adult Subscription” (six Shows for only $179), seniors (ages 62+) can purchase a discounted “Standard Senior Subscription (6 Shows for only $153), and for the seasonal theatergoers, a subscription package for a “3-Show Flex Pass” is available for only $89.
A new “Preview Night Series” package is being offered this season and includes reserved seating and admission to 5 preview night performances for $87.50 (adults), $75 (seniors), and $37.50 (students).
