Carriage House Gallery Exhibit: “Cape May’s Chalfonte Hotel: A Living National Landmark”
Built by Civil War hero Henry Sawyer, taken prisoner 150 years ago (1863), the Chalfonte Hotel has hosted guests continuously for over 137 years. Home to heroes, heroines, heartaches, legends, love affairs, unforgettable characters and nationally famous cooks, the hotel’s intriguing history comes alive in this exhibit guest-curated by Karen Fox at the Carriage House Gallery at the Physick Estate. Cape May Stage presents “How to Make a Rope Swing”: The South Jersey town of Oakbranch is replacing the old schoolhouse. Two local elders have been selected to decide on a person after whom the new building should be named. As they come together, they rediscover the circumstances of their first meeting – a time when the school was first integrated and the region earned its nickname, “The Mississippi of the North.” Performance schedule is as follows: Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at the corner of Bank & Lafayette streets. East Lynne Theatre Company presents “Lost on the Natchez Trace” The year is 1825 and slave auctioneer Malcolm Jeters is headed home when he falls from his mule in Mississippi’s Natchez Trace. Injured and starving, he yells for help. The only one who appears is a runaway slave. The question is, who will save whom in this compelling new play by Jan Buttram, in its New Jersey premiere. Cape May Stage presents “Lend Me A Tenor”: Winner of three Tony and four Drama Desk awards, this side-splitting comedy will have you singing its praises. When a fiery-tempered, world famous Italian opera star comes to town, he finds himself in a compromising situation giving an unexpected star the chance of a lifetime. Cape May’s Annual Harbor Fest: Harbor Fest is a celebration of seafood and song; the sea, its culture, its economy and its ecology. Cape May’s beautiful harbor is the setting while most land-based activities are held at or near the Nature Center of Cape May and a closed section of Delaware Avenue between Wilmington and Brooklyn avenues. Enjoy crafters, food vendors, exhibits and educational displays, the harbor and street festival, arts and crafts vendors, scallop challenge, nature programs, food and seafood, kids’ activities, beer garden, live music, kayaking and more. Cape May Stage Second Stage presents “Bill Bowers in Beyond Words” “Beyond Words” is a collection of Mime, Music, and Monologues: a poignant journey that continues Bowers’ ongoing investigation of silence in our culture. One of the most acclaimed mimes in America today, Bill Bowers’ eloquent movement evokes the deepest truths of the human condition. Bowers is a student of world-renowned mime Marcel Marceau, and has performed and conducted workshops throughout the U.S, Europe and Asia. Cape May’s 2013 Designer Show House: If this is the year you’re determined to turn your cabin into a castle, first visit the 2013 Cape May Designer Show House for inspiration. Nestled on Washington Street across from the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, owners Ionna Iliopulos and Tom Cataldo welcome you to the Cavalier Cottage, a Neo-Victorian home reminiscent of the Southern Mansion or the Mainstay Inn, on a more intimate scale. The 2,800-square foot home features a 900-square foot wrap-around porch, as well as a cupola gracing the low-pitched roof. In the Italianate style popular in the 1850s-’70s, the house features overhanging eaves with oversized brackets and a gracefully columned veranda, perfect for sitting and watching the world go by. Painted in a traditional and elegant off-white with Wedgewood blue trim, a double mahogany door welcomes you to come in and visit. More than a dozen living spaces will spotlight the creativity of local and regional designers, making the 2013 Designer Show House a must-see in Cape May. June 21-Oct. 31. “Listen to the Music Reception,” presented by the Friends of the Physick Estate: Join the Friends of the Physick Estateand enjoy a reception to introduce the newly acquired 1909 Columbia phonograph now on display in the Music Room of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian House Museum. Hear how music might have sounded at the turn of the 20th century with sound demonstrations on the phonograph, which was purchased with funds raised by the Friends’ annual raffle. Light refreshments courtesy of Elan Zingman-Leith, MAC’s Curator, will be offered on the sun porch. Free to Friends members and $5 for non-members. Full Moon Ghost Hunt with Ghost-One: Ghost-One, a paranormal research team based in Pennsylvania, has done extensive investigations and is hosting a full moon ghost hunt on June 22 at 7:45 p.m. at Cape May’s “original” haunted house, the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Enter the Physick Estate with a member of Ghost-One. Try your hand at some of their investigating tools and do EVP readings as you explore different rooms inside the Physick Estate. Afterwards, return to the Carriage House for dessert and to discuss your findings. Tickets are $30 per person and limited to 50 people. Delaware Bay Lighthouse Adventure: Come aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher or the Spirit of Cape May to view and photograph historic lighthouses of the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Most of these lighthouses stand on pedestals out of sight of land and are still operational. Each cruise includes narration on Delaware Bay lore and legend, with information on fishing, spawning grounds and more. Includes complimentary continental breakfast in the morning and a lavish buffet lunch. A cash bar is available. June 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets $99. Lighthouse Full Moon Climb: The Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse invite you to the full moon climb. Take advantage of the light of the full moon and let it guide you up the 199 stairs to the starry top. The Lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park, Lower Township. Tower admission is free for “Friends” members. June 22 at 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Non-members price is $7 for adults, $3 for children (ages 3-12). Lighthouse Sunset Ferry Cruise: Board the Cape May Lewes-Ferry’s M.V. Delaware and join the Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse in the Crow’s Nest Lounge for a 7 p.m. sailing. On the southbound crossing you will experience a beautiful sunset, a perfect backdrop for stories of “The Deadliest Cape.” On the northbound crossing, the beam of the Cape May Lighthouse will be clearly visible. Learn what the lighthouse means to mariners and hear some interesting facts, tales and lore when you “Meet the Keeper.” Advance registration is required and includes walk-on round-trip ferry passage and the Friends presentations. Cherry House Tour (in Total): Tour this beautiful private home, built in 1849 in the Federal style, situated on one of Cape May’s oldest residential streets. Led by owners Frank and Beth Acker, who welcome visitors to their historic home filled with cherished family mementos, antiques, and country décor. Hand-painted murals in several rooms reflect the home’s seashore heritage. Behind the Walls Under the Crawls Trolley Tour: New in 2013! Finally! A tour for those who want to know, “How’d they DO that?” Cape May has one of the largest concentrations of 19th century wood frame structures (over 600) in the United States. Take a look at this National Historic Landmark city from a builder’s perspective; explore the technological advances of the era and learn how things really worked on this one-hour guided trolley tour.
