Carriage House Gallery Exhibit: “Cape May’s Chalfonte Hotel: A Living National Landmark.” Built by Civil War hero Henry Sawyer, taken prisoner 150 years ago (1863), the Chalfonte Hotel has hosted guests continuously for over 137 years. Home to heroes, heroines, heartaches, legends, love affairs, unforgettable characters and nationally famous cooks, the hotel’s intriguing history comes alive in this exhibit guest-curated by Karen Fox at the Carriage House Gallery at the Physick Estate. Cape May Lighthouse 25/20 Celebration: Help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) reopening the Cape May Lighthouse for climbs to the top, and the release after 20 years of the digitally re-mastered CD by Cape May guitarist Geno White, “Music From Inside the Lighthouse,” in which he recorded tracks from inside the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse. Hear the gentle sounds of White playing live on the grounds, enjoy lighthouse-themed entertainment and climb the 199 steps to the top. Cape May Stage presents “How to Make a Rope Swing”: The South Jersey town of Oakbranch is replacing the old schoolhouse. Two local elders have been selected to decide on a person after whom the new building should be named. As they come together, they rediscover the circumstances of their first meeting – a time when the school was first integrated and the region earned its nickname, “The Mississippi of the North.” Performance schedule is as follows: May 17 through June 7, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Official opening and press night is May 18 at 8 p.m. Half-price senior matinee is May 26 at 3 p.m. Half-price preview performance May 17 at 8 p.m. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at the corner of Bank & Lafayette streets. Cape May By the Sea Trolley Tour: Cape May, the Nation’s oldest seashore resort, has been a popular destination for “taking the waters” since before the American Revolution. Your guide, Capt. Tom Carroll, retired Coast Guard, will entertain you with tales of bathing traditions, famous events in town, on the beach and ocean, the strategic use of Cape May for military operations and colorful characters from the past and present. Delaware Bay Lighthouse Adventure: Come aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher or the Spirit of Cape May to view and photograph historic lighthouses of the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Most of these lighthouses stand on pedestals out of sight of land and are still operational. Each cruise includes narration on Delaware Bay lore and legend, with information on fishing, spawning grounds and more. Lighthouse Full Moon Climb: The Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse invite you to the full moon climb. Take advantage of the light of the full moon and let it guide you up the 199 stairs to the starry top. The Lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park, Lower Township. Tower admission is free for “Friends” members. May 25, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Non-members price is $7 for adults, $3 for children (ages 3-12). Full Moon Ghost Hunt with Ghost-One: Ghost-One, a paranormal research team based in Pennsylvania, has done extensive investigations and is hosting a full moon ghost hunt on May 25, at 7:45 p.m. at Cape May’s original haunted house, the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Enter the haunted Physick Estate with a member of Ghost-One. Try your hand at some of their investigating tools and do EVP readings as you explore different rooms inside the Physick Estate. Afterwards, return to the Carriage House for dessert and to discuss your findings. Tickets are $30 per person and limited to 50 people. War at the Shore Trolley Tour: Take a guided and narrated trolley tour that focuses on the impact of World War II on the Cape May area. Guardians of the Cape Trolley Tour: A narrated tour of the beachfront, east of Madison Avenue to the Coast Guard Base where the trolley will continue with a tour of the only USCG training facility in the United States. Trolley will take passengers to the Sunset Parade of the entire battalion of recruits. Following the Sunset Parade, the trolley will shuttle back to the trolley stop. The Keeper’s on Duty: The perfect prelude to a climb of the Cape May Lighthouse. World War II Tower Lookout Museum and Memorial: (Fire Control Tower No. 23) A Museum and Memorial. Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After the award-winning restoration, visitors can climb to the 6th floor spotting gallery while reliving the homeland defense efforts during World War II. The ground floor of the tower is fully accessible.
