Cape May Jazz Festival Partnering with Stockton College

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY — The Cape May Jazz Festival is partnering with Richard Stockton College for all future events.
Rick Dee, Cape May Jazz Festival first vice president, said he had been working on an agreement since June. He said the deal was sealed Thur., Oct 28.
“It’s going to be of great benefit as far as public relations,” said Dee. “It will help us of our mission of preserving and keeping jazz alive and promoting jazz as a true American art form.”
Stockton College will begin an accredited jazz appreciation course leading to a degree, he said. Part of the course requires students attend a certain number of live jazz concerts and write an essay.
He said a student could cover five performances at one Cape May Jazz Festival.
Dee said the agreement also includes financial help from the college although he did not disclose an amount. While the two entities will be presenting some concerts “hand-in-hand,” he said the jazz festival would remain in Cape May.
“Cape May is a musical magnet now for musicians,” said Dee.
Stockton College presents a summer series of rock concerts at the Ocean City Music Pier as well as plays and concerts at its performing arts center in Pomona.
Dee said the board of directors of the jazz festival will remain the same. Stockton Music Professor Lance Olson has been a part of the jazz festival’s program committee for nine months, he said.
The 34th Cape May Jazz Festival will be held Nov. 12-14 featuring the Yellowjackets, Javon Jackson and Les McCann.
