CAPE MAY – Barry Miles returns to Cape May Jazz Vespers Aug. 17, 8:00 p.m. at Cape May Presbyterian Church, Hughes and Decatur Aves., Cape May.
A Cape May County resident and local treasure, Barry started his musical career before his teenage years and was a member of the Musicians Union when he was nine. Since then he has been a driving force in the jazz genre, having released numerous recordings on major labels as a leader, including the recently re-released “White Heat” and “Scatbird” on Mainstream, and “SkyTrain” on RCA.
Barry has performed with many jazz greats such as Woody Herman, Cannonball Adderley, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Roy Eldridge, Buck Clayton, Coleman Hawkins, and John Coltrane. Members of his ensembles have included Woody Shaw, Eddie Gomez, Richard Davis, Ron Carter, Al DiMeola, Pat Martino, John Abercrombie, and Lew Tabackin.
Among his long list of career accomplishments, Barry served as musical director for Roberta Flack for 15 years and performed, produced, and arranged on a number of her albums including “Songs from the Neighborhood”, which won the 2006 Grammy for best children’s album, and her recent album of Beatles songs for Sony/ATV.
Recent years Barry has been composing music for several hundred national and international TV and radio commercials, along with numerous Miramax movie trailers. He continues to record, having recently released his solo piano “Home and Away” volume 1.
