SEA ISLE CITY –
INTRODUCTION TO SIGN LANGUAGE AND DEAF CULTURE: The Cape May County Library will offer a twelve week sign language class at 6:30 p.m. beginning on May 2, 2011 and ending August 1. Classes will be held at the Sea Isle City Library located at 125 John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
“Introduction to Sign Language and Deaf Culture” is being offered to mature teens and adults who would like to learn the basics of American Sign Language and gain an understanding of Deafness as a culture. The class is open to beginners with little or no sign language experience, as well as, to individuals with some previous experience who would like to enhance their knowledge.
American Sign Language is a unique visual language with grammatical and linguistic structure that is different from English. The course will combine vocabulary learning with the basics of grammar and linguistics and will include a brief introduction to Deaf history and culture.
Instructor Misty Bratton has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and has completed the Interpreter Education Program for American Sign Language at Camden County College. Bratton is a member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, both nationally and in the NJ chapter and is currently working in the school system as an educational interpreter and in the community as a freelance interpreter.

TWEEN AFTER SCHOOL CRAFTS: Tweens are invited to “get crafty after school” at the Sea Isle City Library. Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 can come do crafts and have snacks! Join the fun from 3 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, May 9th and May 23rd.

COURT HOUSE –
NATIONAL CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK: Children ages four to twelve are invited to celebrate “National Children’s Book Week” at the Cape May County Library. “Children’s Book Week Crafternoons” will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2nd, Tuesday, May 3rd, Thursday, May 5th and Friday, May 6th in the Children’s Room at the Main Library located at 30 Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Each day there will be a different book-related craft, trivia, games and prizes! While enjoying the activities, children can check out the winners of the “2011 Children’s Choice Book Awards,” the only national book awards chosen by children and teens!
There is no registration required, but a valid library card is needed to attend.
COMMUNICATION CLASS: The Cape May County Library will present a special communication class during the month of May at the Main Library. Join Ann M. McCabe, LMFT and Fay T. Karapanagiotis, Ph.D. for a two-part series on improving your communication skills on May 9 and 16 at 6 p.m. The Library is located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
This workshop will offer participants five essential elements to use to identify your true thoughts and feelings to yourself and others.
Ann M. McCabe, LMFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist with more than 20 years experience helping individuals, couples and families identify what is needed for personal growth and relational connection.
Fay T. Karapanagiotis, Ph.D. is a marriage and family therapist with experience in helping children, couples and families cope with the everyday obstacles presented in life.

FORMAL TEA DEMONSTRATION: The Cape May County Library invites the public to a cooking demonstration at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Main Library located at 30 Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Chef Mark Kalla will demonstrate techniques and aspects of proper tea service including brewing, sandwich making and preparing finger desserts. Participants will be invited to sample the foods that have been prepared.
Chef Mark Kalla is the head chef at Green Cuisine Restaurant in Stone Harbor and also runs the Avalon Elementary School cafeteria and teaches culinary instruction to children during the summer.

AARRP DRIVER SAFETY: The Cape May County Library is pleased to offer the “AARP Driver Safety Program.” The program consists of a six hour workshop from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011. This program will be held at the Cape May Court House Library located at 30 Mechanic Street.
The course provides a review of driving skills and techniques by trained AARP instructor Bill O’Brien which will result in a reduction of your automobile insurance rate. However, participants need to contact their automobile insurance company to find out what the discount is for completing the course.
Registration is required along with a valid New Jersey driver’s license and a valid library card. There is a $12 fee for AARP members (must produce current membership card to receive discount) and a $14 fee for non-members. Please make checks payable to AARP.

VILLAS –
QIGONG AND TAI CHI FOR YOUR HEALTH: The Cape May County Library is offering two “Qigong and Tai Chi for Your Health” classes under the tutelage of Cheryl Crews. The classes will take place at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays beginning May 4, 2011. The classes will be held at the Lower Cape Branch Library located at 2600 Bayshore Road in the Villas.
Tai Chi and Qigong exercises are simple and unhurried movements requiring no weights, extra equipment or special clothing. The movements are art forms that can be performed anywhere, at anytime, to strengthen the body and mind and improve each and every body organ. Special ancient methods, yin and yang, are taught. There are some to relieve stress and tension (yin training) and qi energy methods used for power training (yang training).
Instructor Cheryl Crews has been practicing Tai Chi since 1998 and is currently receiving personal training under the guidance of Sifu Chas Fran Farrell.
UNIQUE CRAFTING: The Lower Branch of the Cape May County Library will host a unique class on crafting window shades in May. Join Valerie Driscoll for a demonstration on the techniques of crafting window shades at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7th. The Lower Branch Library is located at 2600 Bayshore Road in the Villas.
Making professional quality soft shades without a sewing machine is easy and fun. With a needle, thread, staple gun and iron, you can fabricate fully-lined working shades just like a professional interior designer. Learn the basic steps in this hands-on workshop and then create your own design at home.
Interior designer Valerie Driscoll believes that anyone can have a beautifully decorated home no matter what the budget. Her no sew/lo sew classes have taught many do-it-yourselfers to design and execute custom window treatments that enhance the beauty and value of their homes.
