Cape May Comedy Festival Set for July 26-28

CAPE MAY – The town of Cape May, NJ not only holds National Historic Landmark status but is also the nation’s oldest seashore resort. Cape May is known for its beauty, culture, award-winning beaches and rich history. A top resort destination, Cape May will now also be known as the locale for the first annual Cape May Comedy Festival. Cape May already houses numerous renowned festivals including one of the best jazz fests in the country and the comedy festival will prove to be a perfect compliment. Cape May Comedy Festival is coming July 26-28, 2013 and touts performances by America’s top comedians, a stand-up comedy competition, workshops and an outdoor comedy carnival.
The Cape May Comedy Festival will be an all-encompassing town wide event. National headliners including Gilbert Gottfried produced by Catch a Rising Star and Two Funny Philly Guys featuring Joe Conklin and Big Daddy Graham will perform at the main stage at Convention Hall on Friday and Saturday. Other shows throughout town include The Wiseguyz of Comedy featuring Reverend Bob Levy from the Howard Stern Show, Ladies of Laughter, Hometown Heroes, Laugh with Pride, Deceptimcomics and an open mic hosted by High Note Humor. These shows will be occurring at staggered times at venues throughout the city such as The Grand Hotel, The Chalfonte, VFW Post 386, A Ca Mia, Pilot House and The Emlen Physick Estate.
The Stand-Up Comedy Competition will be a highlight of the weekend starting with 96 comics chosen from hundreds of submissions to perform in eight preliminary rounds (all of which are free to attend). First place winners from each round along with two second place wild card finishers will move on to the semi-finals. The top three of the semi-finals will progress to the final round where the winner will be chosen. First place prize includes opening for Gilbert Gottfried during Saturday’s main stage show, $5,000, website, headshots, video of performance, featured comedian articles with It’s Always Funny in Philadelphia andbadslava.com, an improv workshop with The PIT – NYC and guaranteed bookings with participating clubs. Many prestigious comedy clubs that are participating as judges of the contest as well as providing spots for the winner, include Catch a Rising Star (NJ, NY, RI), The Comedy Stop (Atlantic City, NJ), Borgata Comedy Club (Atlantic City, NJ), The Looney Bin (Staten Island, NY), Laff House (Philadelphia, PA).
Workshops held at the Cape May Convention Hall Friday and Saturday will be taught by Brad Trackman, owner of Philadelphia Comedy Institute, and Chris Aurilio, Director of Classes at The People’s Improv Theatre of New York City. Workshops include Comedy A to Z for Teens, Comedy A to Z for All Levels, Sketch Comedy Writing and Improv Comedy Scenework. There are workshops for everyone from those with no comic experience to seasoned professionals. Full course descriptions and registration information can be found at cmcfest.com. There will also be a free, outdoor, family-friendly event, Sunday Funday Comedy Carnival, held at The Emlen Physick Estate. Outdoor performances will include interactive games led by distinguished improv troops, performances by prop comics, magicians, street performers and more.
