NORTH WILDWOOD – The North Wildwood Beach Writers’ Conference, June 7-8, will feature critically acclaimed novelist Cordelia Frances Biddle, author of the popular Martha Beale mystery series.
The author’s fascinating ancestry, including celebrities, financiers, and even saints in the prominent Philadelphia Drexel-Biddle dynasty, were a natural inspiration for historical novels. The author spent years researching her family and the culture that surrounded them.
The Martha Beale series (Without Fear, Deception’s Daughter, The Conjurer) is set in Philadelphia in the 1840s. The authentic characters, settings, and mannerisms truly immerse readers in the period.
Biddle’s conference presentation is titled “The Historical Novel, or How to Successfully Place Yourself and Your Readers in Another Era.” She will discuss the construction, and extensive research involved in bringing to life on the printed page characters from times past.
“It’s interesting to see how very different times and people were, and yet, how very much the same,” Biddle said.
Aspiring writers who have ever been discouraged ought to know that the pre-teen Biddle was told by a teacher: “You will never be a writer. You have no imagination.” Her many fans would respectfully disagree!
Although she excels at writing, Biddle is anything but one-dimensional. She was briefly
deterred when she pursued a career as an actress, appearing in the daytime drama, “One Life to Live.” It was during her downtime on the set that she began to write and start what was to become a prolific career in letters.
She was an actress in New York City, as well, performing in such plays as Albert Innaurato’s Gemini, directed by Jerry Zaks.
Undoubtedly, hers will be a must-see session at the conference, which takes place June 7-8 at the Wildwoods Convention Center, 4501 Boardwalk, overlooking the award-winning Wildwood beach.
