Margot Morrell, author of the bestseller Shackleton’s Way—Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer, comes to Cape May’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse, Bank and Lafayette streets, Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. to present her keynote lecture on Shackleton-style leadership.
As an authority on Shackleton’s people-centered leadership style, Morrell has worked with business, university, and government audiences, including groups at NASA, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the Naval War College.
The keynote lecture, sponsored by Myles Martel, president of Martel & Associates, will focus on maximizing productivity, communicating effectively, creating camaraderie, and driving a positive outcome.
Shipwrecked in Antarctica, Sir Ernest Shackleton faced many of the problems encountered by today’s leaders. With limited resources, he helped a varied group of people work toward a common goal.
He dealt with naysayers, worriers, the disgruntled and bored, brought order to chaos and achieved the impossible.
Shackleton has been called “the greatest leader that ever came on God’s earth, bar none” for saving the lives of the 27 men stranded with him in the Antarctic for almost two years.
Today the public can’t get enough of this once-forgotten explorer, and his actions have made him a model for great leadership and masterful crisis management.
Morrell’s interest in Shackleton was sparked by a library book in 1984. Intrigued by how The Boss had successfully led his team through a grueling ordeal, she set off to learn the secrets of his management style.
Over the course of 15 years and across five continents, Morrell spent countless hours in libraries and transcribing diaries from Shackleton’s Endurance expedition in search of the secrets of his leadership strategies.
The result is a book filled with inspiring and practical lessons.
The Boston Sunday Globe said, ““Even though its target market is leaders and managers, Shackleton’s Way has much broader appeal and application…. Morrell and Capparell have crafted a kind of business parable… [and] draw intelligent parallels between Shackleton’s time and ours.”
With the current economic climate, there is no better time for Morrell to present Shackleton’s enduring leadership lessons. These lessons are not exclusive to one profession or industry; they can be applied by students, teachers, volunteers, businesses and organizations to help them survive today’s challenges and changes.
A recognized expert on leadership, Margot Morrell has worked in management consulting, executive search and financial services, and holds a degree in art history from Newton College of the Sacred Heart and a master’s degree from Simmons.
Morrell has appeared on the NBC Nightly News, CNBC Power Lunch, A&E Biography and has been profiled in The Wall Street Journal, Sunday Telegraph, Globe and Mail and on radio programs all over the world. Today, Morrell travels internationally to speak on leadership at universities and conferences.
Admission is $50 and includes a post lecture cocktail reception with the author at Fresco’s, 412 Bank St. The lecture is limited to 102 people.
Your ticket is also good for a free guided tour of United States Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May led by Commander Gary Thomas at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12.
The book, Shackleton’s Way—Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer will be for sale at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse and Morrell will be signing copies.
