NORTH WILDWOOD – The 11th Annual North Wildwood Beach Writers Conference will be held on June 7th and 8th at the Wildwoods Convention Center. This year, there will be a new workshop for writers with a book-length manuscript that is complete or near completion: Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway will offer a query writing workshop limited to no more than 12 participants, who may sign up for the workshop when they register for the conference. There will be no additional fee for the workshop, but it will be filled on a first come/first serve basis.
Jane and Caitlen state: “We have found that many people work diligently on the manuscript only to stall out on the query, and we have found no suitable models online for what a selling query should look like – and it’s the query that is going to persuade them to read your submission.”
Who they are: Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway are mother and daughter, co-authors of Lady Vernon and Her Daughter a novel-length adaptation of Jane Austen’s early work Lady Susan. They have also co-authored the short story, “What Would James Do?” for the upcoming anthology Jane Austen Made Me Do It to be released in the fall of 2011. “What Would James Do?” recounts the comic plight of 14 year-old James Austen who is desperate to align himself with a clique before starting his freshman year in high school. The coolest kids are all obsessed with vampires, werewolves and zombies – so how is it that James winds up in a group of English country dancers?
Separately Jane, who lives in Ocean City, has authored a series of mysteries set at the South Jersey shore, a volume of Sherlockian novellas, and a few short screenplays. Caitlen, who lives in NYC and is with a small literary agency, will have her first solo title, a middle-grade fantasy, released from Bloomsbury Childrens in early 2012. They also maintain the web site – janetility.com – where they occasionally release one of Jane Austen’s “lost letters”, wherein Austen comments on such pop culture phenomena as Twilight, The Bachelor, House M.D. and Jersey Shore.
