Avalon to Host Two Renowned Military Bands

AVALON – The Borough of Avalon will host two renowned military bands who will perform free concerts during the summer of 2013. The United States 63rd Army Band will perform on July 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Veterans Plaza, located at 21st Street and Dune Drive. The United States 78th Army Band will perform a free beach concert in Avalon on Friday, August 2nd, at Noon at the 30th Street beach.
“The Borough of Avalon has a deep commitment to the active and retired members of the United States military”, said Avalon Recreation Supervisor Brian Juzaitis. “We are honored to welcome two of the very best Army bands to perform this summer in Avalon. Our residents and visitors will be treated to energetic, lively performances”.
The 63rd Army Band was organized in Atlantic City and federally recognized on Oct. 28, 1947. It was called into federal service during the Korean Conflict and served stateside at Fort Polk. On July 6, 1995, the Band was designated as a Commemorative Community by the Department of Defense World War II Commemorative Committee for its support of the many ceremonies during the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II.
The Band’s awards include the Eisenhower Trophy, the Governor’s Unit Award, and the National Guard Bureau’s Superior Unit Award. The 63rd Army Band is proud of its many awards and designations, including its C-1 rating, the highest rating a reserve component can attain. The 63rd Army Band is only National Guard Army Band in the State of New Jersey and is under the command of Warrant Officer Durinda Garrison.
The 78th Army Band is based out of Ft. Dix, New Jersey. 78th Army Band features a rock band known as “Checkmate”. Presently the band’s members are from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The Army Reserve band the 78th trains and performs one weekend a month and performs two weeks of active duty each year. As an Army Reserve band, the 78th Army Band offers musicians the opportunity to serve their country through music while securing funding to help them pay for college.
Each year, the Borough of Avalon hosts Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies at Veterans Plaza, a downtown place of gathering dedicated to the men and women who have served our country. Veterans Plaza is adjacent to the Borough’s award-winning September 11th Memorial Plaza.
