COURT HOUSE – Artists throughout Cape May County and southern New Jersey are donating their works to help support the Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society’s mission to preserve the county’s past. The Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society owns and operates the Museum of Cape May County.
In order to showcase the artists’ work as well as raise funds, the society will be hosting its seventh annual Art for History Fine and Decorative Art Auction Sept. 6.
“In keeping with the society’s commitment to Cape May County’s rich heritage of artists, the works presented and featured at the auction will include local artists as well as artists from throughout the southern New Jersey region,” said Donna Matalucci, Art for History co-chairman.
For the past 87 years the Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society has served a vital role in preserving the county’s past. Treasures from the past are stored and protected in the museum, a staff genealogist is available to trace family history and the library is filled with volumes that help tell the story of Cape May County from its 17th century whaling days to its current standing as one of the state’s most visited tourist areas.
The auction will offer the opportunity to bid on exquisite examples of painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, glass, decoys and artistic woodworking.
The auction will be held in the event building at Ocean View Resort Campground, 2555 Rte. 9. The auction begins at 7 p.m. with a preview at 6:30 p.m. Butlered hors d’oeuvres, along with wine and beer will be served. Tickets are $20 each.
“This is a great evening of entertainment,” said Matalucci. “There will be great entertainment, great food, great camaraderie and great art all for a great cause. Add to that the fact that you’ll be supporting local artists Cape May County’s history and it’s an exceptional experience.”
