CAPE MAY — New Jersey Artist Rick Bogert’s work is inspired by a lifelong passion for sport fishing and the people and places that fill his memories. The artist and some of his works will be at this year’s Harbor Fest. A reception in his honor will take place at 5 p.m., June 18 at the Nature Center of Cape May.
Although he resides in Toms River, Bogert’s work takes him all over the world: from the New England giant tuna grounds to the North and Mid-Atlantic canyons fishing for Marlin and tuna, to the Hawaiian Islands for marlin, and around the Caribbean and throughout Central America searching for billfish. Rick is the featured artist at many billfish tournaments and a supporter of many others both charitable and conservationist.
Throughout a lifetime of traveling, Bogert’s passion for sport fishing and art has been influenced by many different areas and cultures. His painting style ranges from realism to impressionist, and his creations cover a wide range of mediums including pen and ink, watercolor, gouche, acrylic on canvas and oil on canvas. His broad use of colors is always as interesting as the subject itself.
Bogert’s exhibition is only one of many activities taking place during Harbor Fest, a celebration of sea and song at the nature center and along the shores of Cape May Harbor. Festivities will include the Paddle for a Purpose Kayak and Canoe Regatta, a street festival, seafood vendors, a beer garden, live music, arts and craft booths, a Pirate Palooza Kids’ Fair, educational exhibits, a harbor water taxi, sailing demonstrations by the Cape May Yacht Club, Coast Guard rescue demonstrations, nature walks and animal talks and the Great Scallop Challenge – a seafood cook off featuring the finest chefs in Cape May.
Following Bogert’s reception at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, the annual Blessing of the Waters Ceremony will be held at the Cape May Fisherman’s Memorial at 7:00 p.m. The evening will conclude with a Summer Solstice Campfire back at the nature center. The festival will kick into high gear beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 19 with activities all around the harbor.
