Art Show Held for Lower Cape May Regional Students

By Press Release

CAPE MAY — Lower Cape May Regional’s advanced art students are once again excited to announce the 6th annual art show at the Mad Batter Restaurant. This year’s theme, “Impressions and Reflections” comes from the techniques and histories of two unique art styles that students mastered over the past couple of months.
For the first project, students had to develop the articulation of chiaroscuro, or the extreme contrast of lights and darks to give the illusion of depth to a work. This concept was important during the Renaissance, but art teacher Patricia Neville also applied it by setting up a still life. The drawing was done with white charcoal on a black background to allow students to gain a better perspective on drawing reflections from the various bottles, vases, and mirrors in their composition. Some artists created more abstract representations, while others went for a look of realism, both of which give the greater collection a feel of unique diversity.
The art show will also include another form of illusion, but this time in the famous Impressionistic style. For this piece, students chose their own landscape reference and used the classical techniques of broken brushstrokes and vivid colors in order to create texture and mood in their acrylic paintings. To draw further inspiration to this project, students were invited to go on a trip to the New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to study works of Monet and Renoir.
Pam Huber and Mark Kulkowitz, owners of the “Batter,” are setting up a wonderful opening reception where the public has a chance to meet and greet both the artists and their instructor. The show will be on display from Feb. 6 to March 6, with the reception being held Feb, 9 from 3 to 5 in the afternoon. The drawings and paintings will be showcased in all rooms of the restaurant, which is located at 19 Jackson Street, Cape May.
