GOSHEN — For over 350 youngsters on 31 baseball and softball teams, Sat., April 21 was opening day at Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex.
Mayor Daniel Lockwood pitched the first ball of the season followed by Committeeman Timothy Donohue and sponsors’ representatives Michael Clark for Sturdy Savings Bank and Jim McCarty for Burke Motor Group.
Ross Denham, president, Middle Township Baseball and Softball Association welcomed all players and their parents, and thanked all who made the day possible with donations of time and money.
Alyysa Sullivan sang the national anthem and “God Bless America.” Rev. Keith Strunk gave the Invocation.
Frank Dougherty administered the Little League oath to all players and coaches as they lined the manicured diamond.
As a tribute to former Mayor F. Nathan Doughty, who presented the association with a $4,000 check, the batting facility was named in his honor. Also an annual event was Doughty singing his rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
After the morning ceremonies concluded, it was “Play Ball!” for all the teams. The games began shortly afterward and lasted all day into the evening.
