AVALON – From archaeology and book lectures to videos games and workshops – there’s something for everyone at the Avalon Free Public Library between July 8 and July 20, 2013.
Bits & Pieces Archaeology Program
The Avalon Free Public Library will host a Bits & Pieces Archaeology Program for grades 6 and up on July 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the elementary school multipurpose room. Joseph Angemi, director of the Avalon History Center, will talk about 18th century barrier island lifestyles and participants will be able to examine artifacts. He will also explain what archaeologists do. Registration is required by calling 609-967-7155 or stopping by the circulation desk.
Decluttering Lecture
The Avalon Free Public Library will host a Decluttering Lecture on WedJuly 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the elementary school. The speaker, Ellie Weiss, will be lecturing on the signs and behavior types of persons with a clutter condition. Methods to deal with clutter will also be discussed.
Personal Safety Lecture
The Avalon Free Public Library will present a Personal Safety lecture on July 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Retired police officer, Joseph Kash, will be the speaker.
Creative Writing
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a Creative Writing class on July 11 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Participants will receive instructor tips and feedback on poetry, memoirs, short stories, articles, and books. Registration is required.
PC Computer Class
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a PC Computer Class on July 12 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Topic is Security & Maintenance for Android Phones & Tablets. Registration is required by calling (609) 967-7155 or stopping by the circulation desk.
Author Lecture with Kathleen Schoonover
The Avalon Free Public Library will host a lecture and book signing with local author Kathleen Schoonover on July 10 at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the elementary school. Schoonover will be discussing her book, When Collagen Fails. A Q&A and book signing will follow.
Author Lecture with David Dean
The Avalon Free Public Library will host a lecture and book signing with former Avalon Chief of Police and mystery writer, David Dean on July 11 at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the elementary school. Dean will be discussing his book, The Thirteenth Child. A Q&A and book signing will follow.
PC Computer Class
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a PC Computer Class on July 12 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Topic is Getting to Know Windows 8. Registration is required by calling (609) 967-7155 or stopping by the circulation desk.
Video Games
The Avalon Free Public Library will be playing video games on July 12 from 10:30 a.m. to Noon. All ages are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.
Musical Performance by Wade Preston Trio
The Wade Preston Trio will perform at the Avalon Free Public Library on July 9 at 7 p.m. in the elementary school gymnasium. The show will feature the sounds of Billy Joel and other artists. The performance is free and open to the public.
Social Media Users Group
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a Social Media Users Group meeting on July 8 from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. Instructor Robert Hoesly will be lecturing on Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, if time permits.
iPad Workshop
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold an iPad Workshop on July 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please bring your iPad to learn about its features. Topic is Photos and Camera. Registration is required by calling 609-967-7155 or stopping by the circulation desk.
Young Writers Workshop
The Avalon Free Public Library will host a Young Writers Workshop on July 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. Bring in your writing and receive feedback on writing techniques. Participants will also be given the option to record their works as podcasts that will be launched on the library’s website.
Computer Safety Lecture
The Avalon Free Public Library will present a lecture on Computer Safety, Scams and Frauds, on July 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Retired police officer, Joseph Kash, will be the speaker.

The Avalon Free Public Library will host a lecture and book signing with Dr. Glenn Haas on July 16 at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the elementary school. Haas, who was born and raised in Philadelphia, will be discussing his historical fiction, The Patriot Surgeon. A Q&A and book signing will follow.

The Avalon Free Public Library will host a Young Writers Workshop on July 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. Bring in your writing and receive feedback on writing techniques. Participants will also be given the option to record their works as podcasts that will be launched on the library’s website.
Beginning Genealogy Workshop
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a Beginning Genealogy Workshop on July 20 from 10am to 5 p.m. Registration is required by calling 609-967-7155 or stopping by the circulation desk.

The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a Mother/Daughter Book Club on Thursdays, July 18, and August 8 from 10 am to 11:30 a.m. Open to grades 3 to 7. Aunts, grandmothers, and other women who are important in your life can also be your book club partner. Please register by calling 609-967-7155 or stopping by the circulation desk.
Astronomy Presentation & Telescope Observation
The Avalon Free Public Library will present an Astronomy Presentation & Telescope Observation on July 18 at 7:30 p.m. Speakers from the South Jersey Astronomy Club will hold a lecture and telescope observation at Avalon Community Hall, 30th Street and the Beach.
Download Workshop
The Avalon Free Public Library will hold a Download Workshop on July 16 from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. Bring your Kindle, Nook, iPad, Android phone, etc. to learn how to download eBooks and eAudiobooks. No registration is required.
Video Games
The Avalon Free Public Library will be playing video games on July 19 from 10:30 a.m. to Noon. All ages are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.
Special Story Time
The Avalon Free Public Library will present a Special Story Time at 10 a.m. on July 18 in the multipurpose room at the elementary school. Enjoy a reading from the book Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late. Crafts and Puzzles for all ages.
