4th Annual ‘Shiver’ Propels Hundreds into Icy Water

By Jim McCarty

STONE HARBOR – 37 degree water temperatures did little to chill the warm feelings and good natured fun on display at the Stone Harbor Shiver March 15. Proceeds from the day’s events, including a dip in the ocean, will help fund two good causes according to Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce office coordinator Jean Miersch.
“The Family Promise of Cape May County’s mission is to help provide housing for those who have been displaced,” Miersch said.
She added that “they work with local churches to provide temporary places to stay.” She also described the other charity, Friend in Need which helps raise money for families in the area who experience serious illness in the family.
NBC40’s chief meteorologist Dan Skeldon served as parade Grand Marshall and MC for the costume and performance contest that preceded the mass charge into the water at the 96th street beach. Numerous performance groups showed off their creativity and wit with costumes and skits that were judged by the reigning King and Queen of the ‘shiver,’ John O’Dey and Liz Tracy, as well as Mayor Suzanne Walters. Diamond Club won best team costume, Shelby Surf and Turf won best individual costume, while Alice in Winter Wonderland won best team name. Other awards were to be announced at a later time.
Finally, hundreds of spectators filled the beach area when suddenly, a cannon boomed. This was the signal for dozens of hardy souls to make a mad charge into the ocean, only to charge even faster back out of the water to get warm. Everyone, including the bathers, were laughing as they gasped for air after their shivering experience. Luckily, the air temperature was much warmer than the ocean, and the sun shined brightly on a fun activity that also serves area residents who need a helping hand.
