To the Editor:
I have been to several events at Lower Township schools, and the officials at the start of the program introduced themselves and talked about the program and the teachers involved, etc. Then the program begins. The band or chorus starts without a Pledge of Allegiance to our American flag, which is right at the side of the stage. These have been both elementary and junior high events. I have thought of standing and starting the Pledge of Allegiance myself in hopes others would join in, but I never did.
Recently, I attended an eighth grade National Honor Society induction for two great-grandchildren, and the attendees were asked to stand and pledge allegiance to our flag, and I was thrilled. Maybe it was part of the National Honor Society ceremony or because I had previously asked a principal at another program why we do not have our Pledge of Allegiance to our flag as part of each program. He said he would ask about why we don’t do this.
I know school is almost over and the same two eighth grade students will be having a graduation ceremony. I do hope we can get back to pledging allegiance to our country’s flag at these school events from now on. If we lived in China, I’m sure that would be required. Let’s honor our great country’s flag as we used to do when I was growing up.
