Obituary

HEENAN, CONSTANCE JANE

HEENAN, CONSTANCE JANE "CONNIE" Constance Jane "Connie" Heenan, 77, of Avalon, New Jersey, died peacefully at home on April 11, 2024 surrounded by her family. Born in San Francisco, CA the third of Edward and Jane (Nugent) Heenan's nine children, Connie was an independent spirit from childhood through her adulthood, living life on her terms from Wiesbaden to North Wales to Philadelphia and Stone Harbor. A school teacher and reading specialist for more than 40 years, her profession took her on teaching stints in Japan and England, but she primarily brought her passion for reading to thousands of students in her native Philadelphia. Each of her 27 nieces and nephews can no doubt recount being read to by Aunt Connie, or being given a special book for birthdays or Christmas. She was the loving wife of Stephen Horwitz and stepmother to Michael Horwitz and his wife Alisa, and grandmother to their children Oliver and Nola. Connie and Stephen retired to Avalon and enjoyed hosting their children, grandchildren and extended family at their home on the Bay. Connie's daughter Maura (Mari) Heenan Coskey was, from the moment she was born, her proudest accomplishment. Having Mari, her son-in-law Michael, and her grandchildren Olivia and Mikey close by in her later years was Connie's version of winning the lottery. In addition to Stephen, Mari, and Michael and her grandchildren, Connie also leaves five siblings, Mari O'Brien, Kevin Heenan, Brian Heenan, Jack Heenan and Jill Mull. She was predeceased by her brother Col. Michael Heenan and her sisters Patricia Heenan and Sharon Galbally. Services will be Friday, April 19, 2024 at St. Brendan The Navigator Parish, Maris Stella Church, 50th Street and Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ 08202. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Mass will start at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Connie's name to the Play with Jack Foundation, PO Box 124, Avalon, NJ 08202 or at www.playwithjackfoundation.com.
