HARMON-WEISS,
DR. SANDRA
Dr. Sandra “Sandy” Harmon-Weiss passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2025, at 81 years of age in Cape May Court House, NJ. She is survived by sister Karen Centrella, half-brother Bill Hoff (Jeanne), daughter Jennifer Sekerka, and stepsons Eric Weiss (Hyla), Christopher Weiss (Deb) and Rick Weiss (Lauren).
Sandy was born and raised in Norristown Pennsylvania. A scholar athlete, she excelled in Tennis and Field Hockey in High School, and as an alumna was named to the Norristown High School Hall of Fame for her achievements off the athletic field. Sandy continued her studies at Antioch College in Ohio, later transferring to Ohio Northern University. She eventually returned to Pennsylvania where she worked as a laboratory technician at Temple University's Skin and Cancer Hospital while enrolling in night classes to finish her bachelor's degree at Temple University before attending Temple's School of Medicine.
After completing her Residency in Family Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Sandy went into private family practice in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. She also served as assistant director of the Family Practice Center at Abington Memorial Hospital from 1977 to 1984, and clinical assistant professor at Temple's School of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health from 1978 to 1984.
Sandy left private practice in the late 1980s to become a medical director for U.S. Healthcare Inc. (now Aetna), eventually becoming vice president, director and head of core government programs. During her tenure at Aetna-US Healthcare, she testified at Congressional hearings, as well as served as advisor, member and reviewer for various initiatives of the Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, American Geriatrics Society and other government agencies, think tanks, committees and nonprofits.
Always passionate about her alma mater, Temple University, which she liked to call a “Smorgasburg of Education,” Sandy served the University in numerous roles, including chairing the Board of Visitors for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, serving on the Board of Visitors for both the Kornberg School of Dentistry and Tyler School of Art and Architecture, chairing the board of Temple University Hospital and vice chair of the Temple Health System board. Finally, she served as a member of the University's Board of Trustees since Oct. 2016.
Outside of work, Sandy was an avid student of American Decorative Arts, in particular the study of silver and textiles. She was both a member of the Board of Trustees and Collections Committee at the Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 11 AM at St Mary's Episcopal Church, 9425 Third Ave, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247. In Lieu of flowers, the Harmon-Weiss family has requested gifts be made in Sandy's memory to the Emma C. Weiss Memorial Scholarship, an endowed scholarship that is given to medical students planning careers in primary care: https://giving.temple.edu/weiss
