“Tara’s Happy Boxes,” cigar boxes filled with toys, socks, stuffed animals and other treats, have been distributed in Cape May County, in nearby South Jersey counties and Philadelphia, and even at an orphanage in South Africa. The boxes, for children who are going through difficult times, no matter the reason, were the inspiration of Tara Scioli, a former Ocean City police officer who founded Tara’s Happy Boxes Nonprofit. Scioli got the idea for her nonprofit from her grandson, Cayden, who suggested that sick children might like a “happy box.” Scioli says that, since 2020, she has personally handcrafted more than 4,000 keepsake boxes that have been distributed to children through more than 16 organizations, including Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, local police departments and the Jehovah Jireh Home, the orphanage in South Africa.
