Voters in Middle Township Fire District No. 3, Green Creek, supported the purchase of a new squad-type fire truck at an estimated cost of $1.3 million.

The fire district plans to use $900,000 in accumulated funds and the proceeds from the retirement and trade-in of two other trucks to reduce the amount that will need to be financed. There were 108 ballots cast, with 105 of those approving the truck purchase. By way of comparison, in the annual election in February there were only 51 ballots cast in fire district no. 3.

Minutes of the fire district’s monthly meeting show that the discussions leading to the decision to pursue a new truck date back to the spring. At a May 25 meeting, a decision was reached to initiate the process of a new truck purchase and to trade in a 2006 squad truck and a 2001 tanker as part of the process.

Approval from the Cape May County Board of Elections was secured in July and the special election was set and advertised for Oct. 19.
