GILSON, PETER J.

GILSON, PETER J. Peter J. Gilson, a cherished figure known for his loving, selfless, and generous spirit, passed away at the age of 91 on February 19, 2024, in Woodbine, NJ. Born on September 10, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Peter and Bridget Gilson, he was the youngest sibling to Ann Needham, Margaret Bennett, and Patrick Gilson, all of whom predeceased him. Peter graduated from West Catholic Boys High School in 1950 and from there embarked on a life rich in variety and service. His entrepreneurial spirit while he was young had him selling flowers, Christmas trees, and New Year's horns. His early career was spent laboring at a leather tannery, a rug company, and the Pennsylvania Railroad. His commitment to his country led to his service in the US Air Force during the Korean War, an experience that took him to New York, Texas, and Tennessee. While in the Air Force, in December of 1954, Peter married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor. They cherished a 44-year marriage that saw them settling in Philadelphia and raising five children while working at the Metal Supply Company for 34 years, before Eleanor's sudden passing. Following "retirement' he moved to Woodbine, NJ in 1995, where he continued to work in several capacities and spend time with the love of his life Sharon. He served as a Foster Grandparent of New Jersey, a volunteer at The ARC Program of Cape May County and assisted with the Head Start Program, aiding students in Woodbine. His dedication to his local community was further displayed through his work in Stone Harbor's Beach Tag and Public Works Office, as well as a member of the Cape May County String Band. Peter is survived by his daughters Kathleen (Ken) Newman, Denise (Greg) Hannah, his son Dennis (Mary) Gilson, his loving partner Sharon O'Neill, and his cherished grandchildren Kenneth, Christopher, Matthew, Christopher, Gregory, Amber, Chelsea, Haley, Devon, and Dennis. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law Wendy Gilson and Carol Gilson. His sons Alfred and Peter Jr. predeceased him, leaving a legacy of love and remembrance. Services will be Saturday, February 24, 2024 at St. Casimir Church, 304 Clay Street, Woodbine, NJ 08270. Viewing will be 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Eulogy and time of sharing will start at 10:00, followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment is private.
