The Galloway Township Police Department announced that more than 25 animals found living in poor conditions were removed from a township property and that a Wildwood Crest man was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals.

In a press release issued via social media, the department said that on Saturday, Feb. 10, detectives responded to the 100 block of Zurich Avenue to conduct a follow-up investigation regarding an animal complaint.

During the investigation, detectives contacted Jason Millar, 23, of Wildwood Crest, who identified himself as the owner/caretaker of the animals. While inspecting their living conditions, investigators located a deceased dog on the property. Further investigation led to the discovery of approximately 25 additional dogs and one cat living in poor conditions, with insufficient access to food and water.

Galloway Township patrol units and animal control arrived on the scene, where arrangements were made for the care and placement of the recovered animals. Assisting police with the animals were the township Office of Emergency Management, the Humane Society of Atlantic County, Hopeful K9 and the Atlantic County Animal Shelter.

Millar was charged with cruelty to animals and released on a summons pending a court date. Additional charges are pending, as the investigation is ongoing.

The Galloway Township police encourage anyone who witnesses or suspects abuse of animals to file a report with the department, which has trained law enforcement officers who investigate all claims of animal cruelty and abuse.

The department will be announcing how people can work with its local partners to adopt the animals rescued during this investigation.
