My younger sister and her friend came for a visit recently. My cousin from Delaware who is my sister’s age wanted to get together with her while she was here, so we headed to Lewes for a visit. Jan chose to take the ferry just for the fun of it.
We had beautiful weather for November and our guests decided to enjoy the day by taking advantage of the seating on the outside decks where the sun was warm and wind was light. We sat on the back of the vessel and watched the seagulls flying over the wake as they tried to catch a fish or two for lunch.
Sitting there in the sun and watching birds flying the long distance between the ferry docks with ease brought forth to me the absolute grandeur of our Father God. To produce this beautiful day, to create birds that wing so easily across the water, to give us the blessing of family, He is a God that meets us in the every detail of our lives.
There are days when I feel my heart will burst with the largess of what God has given me that day. I have been brought to tears of thankfulness and joy from the smallest and most unexpected gift from Him. What a wonderful life God has blessed to those of us who know and trust Him. It is no wonder we have to share our joy of the Lord with others.
During our day trip, because we rode the ferry as walk-on passengers, when we arrived at Lewes Kathy, my cousin, and her daughter picked us up and drove us to one of the local restaurants located on the canal. We had a delightful lunch with time to chat and catch up with each other before the return trip home.
We could have had a comparable day if Kathy had taken the ferry to Cape May. We have often enjoyed outside lunches on the deck at the Lobster House.
We live in such a wonderfully diverse area with great restaurants and seafood galore. The sun is out often enough in the fall to give us warm days or at least warmer days than my sister was enjoying in western Pennsylvania where they have already had several freezes. God has indeed blessed my husband, Neil, and me with the perfect place for us to live and to retire. There is so very much to do here.
I lost an earring somewhere that day and so I checked with the ferry’s lost and found. Although they were extremely gracious to search for my earing, it was not found. That problem, though, will be relieved easily by another day trip to the Sunset Beach Gift Shop where I bought the earrings in the first place.
Sunset Beach is one of our favorite winter go-to spots after a day of meandering along Cape May’s highways and byways. We take different routes each time we go. Occasionally, to drive the cold away we bring snacks and sit in our sun-warmed car watching the ferries come and go at the park on Beach Drive. We occasionally stop by the zoo if the sun is high and warm enough to keep the chill off.
Usually there is an event somewhere in Cape May County. If we keep our eye on the Herald’s ‘Do The Shore’ we will find some type of daytime fall to winter fun.
We did miss one of our favorite annual events because of our Lewes trip – the Lower Township Veterans Parade. I am sure it was as stirring as it usually is. Both Neil and I have been out of the Air Force for many years but there is something particularly heartwarming about that parade that chokes me up every time we attend. I am sure it has everything to do with the good feelings we receive from all the small town folks who live with us here in Cape May County.
Neil and I both feel mightily blessed that we have ended up in Ocean City and can enjoy all that this area has to offer. There is very little in South Jersey that we have not seen or visited.
For a shortened trip, a friend invited me to join her for a tour of two of the 1920s-era dollhouses here in Ocean City. They have not been open to the public for as long as I can remember and we delighted in getting to tour them. Another one checked off the list!
There are so many things to do here and God has blessed us now with the time to enjoy them. I pray you too will take time to partake of a few of the many events available in Cape May County this winter. Maybe I’ll see you there.
