WILDWOOD – Roughly 120 families of dead veterans gathered 10 a.m. on May 23 in front of the Wildwoods Convention Center to pay tribute to fallen loved ones. They did so during a first-ever “Flags of Liberty” ceremony, where each family unfurled a full-sized American flag at once in a colorful display of remembrance. Flags were unfurled after speeches from veterans and dignitaries. Many family members of fallen veterans wore t-shirts that spelled the name of those deceased.

Over 120 flags were unfurled in total, so many that the procession extended onto the boardwalk itself and into a nearby parking lot. Over 500 people attended the event in total. The event was nearly moved inside due to rain, but unexpected sunny weather shone down on the gathering.

Macie McCracken, center, and Broc Denke, left, came to the event as volunteers with Wildwood High School. Denke holds a flag that would later be unfurled in honor of fallen veteran John Lynch from North Wildwood.

The flags were held in a line that dotted the front of the Wildwoods Convention Center, onto the boardwalk, and into a nearby parking lot.
