It was another good week of fishing, despite the windy conditions. All the local spring favorites are biting in our local waters. The ocean is good for sea bass, the backwaters have flounder and striped bass as does the local surf, which also has drum fish, and the Delaware Bay has drum fish, as it usually does this time of year. Let’s check things out.

The Starfish had a good Memorial Day weekend, as they were able to catch plenty of sea bass with multiple limits. One of those limits went to Jerry Rau who, due to his fishing skill, has been mentioned in previous columns over the seasons. Nice effort, Jerry.

Monday saw a slower day, but that was made up for with the better quality of fish. Jim M. took the pool with a 4-pound sea bass that beat out another nice sea bass, this one caught by an angler named Tina. Some ling were also mixed in with the catch. Tuesday’s trip saw plenty of action, but you had to work through many shorts to get your keepers. Russ’ hard work paid off as he was rewarded with the pool fish.

The Miss Avalon also had a good Memorial Day weekend while targeting sea bass at the local reefs. They were able to power through the windy weather and put up some good numbers.

The private charter on Saturday returned to the dock with 175 keepers, so when coupled with the many throwbacks, it made for a day with plenty of action. The Sunday open-boat trip finished with 95 keepers and three anglers with their limits. Austin Timpson was one of those three anglers, and he had his limit by 10 a.m.

The Avalon Lady has been fishing the backwaters for flounder and has had plenty of action, with a good mix of shorts and keepers.

Early week trips saw four keepers scattered among the anglers on Monday, while the Middle Township Middle School had a trip on Tuesday. The students and advisors caught 55 throwback flounder and four keepers. One student also caught a bluefish that provided her with a nice fight. This is the third year that the school and its Beach and Boat Life class, a special-interest class, have fished with the Avalon Lady.

Whale Creek Marina reported that the flounder catches continue to impress, as an unidentified angler recorded a 28-inch, 7.86-pound catch. Another catch to note was the 24-inch flounder that a 9-year-old angler caught on their birthday. Congratulations, and happy birthday!

Boulevard Bait and Tackle was busy with anglers stopping in to show off their flounder catches, which were many, and impressive.

Notable catches went to Doug, who landed a 24-inch, 5.78-pounder, the two-person limit for Joe and Nina that included a 5.24-pound, 24-inch fish, the limit caught by R.J. with a 4.5-pounder among three fish, the four keepers caught by Tony and a friend, the 22-inch, 4.06-pound flounder caught by Jim and the 20-inch, 2.86-pound fish caught by Ed. Add to those flounder the three bluefish that Tony T. caught during a Memorial Day weekend blitz of the beach.

Here is a reminder that Boulevard Bait and Tackle is sponsoring the Slack Tide Flounder Tournament June 14. Registration is open, so reach out to Cameron for more information.

Sea Isle Bait and Tackle reports that there are still some nice striped bass around the area. Angler Fran offered up some proof with a picture of a nice striper he caught while down at the beach with his family. Clams were the bait that the fish fell for.

The Sea Star III continues to pull double duty. That means sea bass by day and drum fish by night. That also means a busy crew.

The drum fish action was highlighted by the numbers put up by Jordyn Collins. She had an “amazing night” of action as she caught the first three keeper drum fish of her fishing career. Congratulations, Jordyn, on your great evening of fishing.

The sea bass action at the reef continues to shine, and to top it off, the first keeper fluke of the summer was caught on Monday of the holiday weekend.

The weekly pool winners on the sea bass trips were Frank Servocky (twice, with 2- and 2.1-pounders), Troy Williamson (2.75), Dave Dougherty (2.0) and Penny Fail (2.2), while drum fish winners were Bill Buckham (21) and the above-mentioned Jordyn Collins, with a 23-pounder.

Call Captain Chuck at 609-884-3421 to get information on any trip or to make reservations for a drum fish trip.

The Miss Chris is fishing for sea bass and drum fish, and both species are still biting. They didn’t let the recent windy, foul conditions deter their efforts. Trips can be booked online through their website.

Captain Adam from the Atlantic Adventure has been busy during the day catching sea bass, and then putting his fares on drum fish during the evening trips.

Drum fish trips leave the dock at 4 p.m. and return at 10 p.m., while day trips for sea bass vary. Captain Adam runs some “ultra marathon” trips that are 12 hours long, while other trips run 10 hours. Either way, the trips target larger sea bass, ling and possibly pollock if any are hanging around the targeted wrecks. Give him a call at 609-435-3119 to see what’s on his agenda and how you can reserve a spot.

Captain Bob, from Full Ahead Sport Fishing, has had good trips targeting sea bass. A holiday weekend outing allowed him to have his patrons catch their boat limit in less than two hours. The cooler contained a nice mix of keeper fish, with some larger fish mixed in with the others.

Captain Tom from Fishin’ Fever Sportfishing Charters is currently fishing for sea bass by day and drum fish by night. They’ve had good results on these trips but are looking ahead to later in the season when they’ll fish for tilefish, fluke (ocean) and tuna. These trips just started and will run through June. Check Facebook to see their posted schedule, then call 609-868-6014 to make your reservation.

The Sailor’s Delight is fishing behind the Wildwoods for flounder, but will also accept any bluefish, weakfish or stripers that want to bite a bait. They fought through the recent winds and put some flounder in the boat. Better weather should result in increased catch totals. Call 609-827-8309 to book a spot along their orange rail.

The Starlight Fleet has been getting out targeting sea bass, and has been putting their patrons on them. On one recent trip an angler landed a keeper flounder, a sure sign that flounder are moving to their summer home at the local reefs.

An outing that you may want to participate in, especially after getting in a day of fishing, is approaching. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a nice barbecue.

Hook, Line and Warriors is hosting its 2025 Benefit Barbecue on Saturday, June 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Belleplain VFW Post. Food, drinks and fun will be provided. Entertainment will be by Eric Simonsen. Early Bird tickets are available for $20. Call Captain Frank at 609-425-9401 to buy tickets or to get more information.

Another nice week of mixed catches made for some good results. Flounder in the back, and starting to show up out front, sea bass at the reefs and wrecks, along with some ling, and drum fish in the bay. Good luck if you get out, take care, and I’ll see you around.
