Fishing Line: Feb. 14

By Mark Robbins

Welcome to what is almost always our slowest time of the year. Most, if not all, local boats, other than some personal boats, are off the water and being prepped for the approaching spring season. Captains are getting somewhat of a break in, but their days still involve maintaining their boat through engine repairs, installing some new features, or electronics, or just with applying multiple coats of new paint. Those are filling up a lot of the time now, but there are other things we can mention.

For those who just want to fish once more, well, maybe twice, before taking a break before the spring season arrives, you are in luck.

The Sea Owl, with Capt. Chris Dossantos, is scheduled to sail through the end of February. He is running chartered trips as well as open boat trips that still have available spots. Recent trips being run to some “long range” wrecks have been producing both “fish of a lifetime” as well as some nice “roasters.” He is located in Point Pleasant Beach and can be reached at 732-688-7271. Don’t delay as February is rapidly passing by.

If you want to stay closer to home, and change up your fishing game, you can go for a short ride up to Atlantic County.

White Perch are being caught in the Egg Harbor and Mullica rivers and in the creeks off of both of these. All you’ll need is some light-weight gear and some bloodworms.

Don’t forget that March 1 is rapidly approaching. Why is that important? Because it’s the opening of the backwaters for stripers. Prepare all your gear, but most importantly, remember to use in-line circle hooks if you are using a natural bait. Bait is defined as any marine or aquatic organism, live or dead, and either whole or parts thereof. If you’re using an artificial lure then the hook rule does not apply.

Also, don’t forget to register for the Saltwater Registry. There are some changes to the system that has been in use since 2011. If you registered anytime since then, understand that your account is now void. If you don’t have a current freshwater, crabbing or hunting license, you will need to create a new account within the NJ Fish and Wildlife licensing system. You’ll receive a CID number that will replace your old registry number. Saltwater registrations can be obtained and printed online by going to NJFishandWildlife.com.

The 2024 Discover Boating Atlantic City Boat Show is scheduled to take place at the Atlantic City Convention Center from Feb. 28 through March 3. Many boats and plenty of fun and attractions will provide a good time for attendants of all ages.

I mentioned this in a recent column, but you’ll want to remember to clean your gear with a good freshwater washdown if you haven’t already. Proper care of your gear, including the loosening of your drag system when not in use for an extended time, will increase the life of your gear. A little prevention now will lessen problems later, save you some money, and hopefully increase your catch at the end of the day.

Well, it’s a slow time in the fishing world. It seems like we are in a state of semi-hibernation similar to the raccoons and opossums you may see occasionally in the winter. We’re not totally fishing, but neither are we totally at rest. We’re thinking, and planning for it, but there is still some time to wait. Those animals are in a state of torpor, which is marked by decreased physiological activity and a reduced body temperature and metabolic rate. We’re not quite that restful but the slow time may just make it feel that way. If you venture out to try your luck, either for blackfish or perch, good luck, take care, and I’ll see you around.
