Another week where results were good when anglers got out, but where anglers couldn’t get out enough. It’s what you need to expect this time of the year, so as anglers, we just have to accept it. Also, and unfortunately, it’s harder to get enough anglers to show up during the week. Economically, it’s not a smart decision to run on those days, so the weekend becomes the main time to fish. If the conditions aren’t good then, well, you know the rest. Let’s see what happened when the captains were able to get their patrons out on the water.
The patrons on the Starfish had a good weekend as Tyler doubled up on Saturday as the high-hook and the pool winner. The Sunday trip saw Rich win the pool. He was also able to hook into a nice lobster that stayed on the hook long enough to clear the rail. Sal also had a nice keeper during that trip. The high hook on Sunday had four keepers. Most aboard caught two or three keepers.
The Tuesday trip, before the storm came through, saw a number of limits spread around the boat. This was possible because of a good mix of shorts and keepers, with some bigger fish that reached the 7-pound mark on the scale.
The Miss Avalon crew was able to get out the day before the recent midweek blow. There was a good mix of shorts and keepers. There was plenty of life and action, which is all you can ask for. Bites are opportunities, and that’s a good thing.
Sea Isle Bait and Tackle reported a nice striped bass for lady angler Frances. She was out on Tuesday, when a calm ocean gave up a 31-inch bass to her. She was trolling out in front of Sea Isle when she connected for her nice catch.
Captain Chuck, from the Sea Star III, was ready to fish hard for another week, but the weather got in the way. Some trips were lost, but when they did get to the reef the “action was good.” A nice 8-pounder was caught, but didn’t win the pool since the angler didn’t participate. There were also some limits caught, which made those anglers quite happy.
The happiest angler aboard, though, was the pool winner, Kirk Williams. He was able to take home the winnings with a 5.8-pound blackfish. Nice fish, Kirk.
The Cape May Lady got out on Sunday and had a really good day, as they had a boat limit of blackfish. The early part of the trip was spent waiting for the weather to calm, but when it did the fishing was really good. Brandon Overstreet and Jerry Rau, two anglers I’ve fished with in the past, were on the trip, and both happily had their limits. Nice effort by both of those guys.
Their Tuesday trip provided an average of four keepers per angler. They had good action on the wrecks that they checked out, which helped put those keepers in the cooler.
Even with the midweek blow, some nice fishing was squeezed in by the end of day on Tuesday. After that, at least for a couple days, not much fishing occurred. We won’t get those days back, so we need to make the most of those ahead of us. Good luck if you get out, take care, and I’ll see you around.
