CAPE MAY – The County of Cape May will be completing the final resurfacing of the phase 2 Jackson Street/Lafayette Street roadway improvement project beginning on May 6, 2024. On Monday, May 6, 2024, milling will commence along Lafayette Street (CR 633) beginning at the intersection of Lafayette and Sydney and continuing south along Lafayette Street to Madison Avenue. The milling depth within this section of the project will be approximately 6” after which a 4” intermediate base course will be installed. Upon completion of the base course installation on Wednesday, milling will continue south toward Jackson Street in preparation for a final 2” thick asphalt surface course. Lafayette Street will be closed to thru traffic during the paving operation which is anticipated to be completed by Wednesday, May 15.

During the paving operation, residents will have access to their homes, but various portions of the roadway may be inaccessible for brief periods of time. An on-street parking restriction will be in place throughout the duration of the paving process.

Motorists traveling south approaching the Lafayette Street bridge will detour onto Washington Street to the south end of Cape May. Motorists heading north along Jackson Street will be detoured east along Jackson Street to Beach Avenue to Pittsburgh Avenue. Northbound traffic approaching Broadway (CR 626) are encouraged to continue heading east along Broadway to Beach Avenue.

Upon completion of milling and paving operation and subsequent striping of the roadway that should be completed by May 22 (weather permitted), Lafayette Street will be permanently reopened with normal traffic patterns.
