Dorann Heminway is Cape May’s Employee of the Month

From the City of Cape May

Cape May City recognized Dorann Heminway from the Police Department as the November 2023 Employee of the Month. Dorann is the Police Department’s Administrative Clerk and Confidential Assistant to the Chief of Police. Dorann has been secretary to the past four Chiefs of the Cape May Police Department.

Dorann’s duties and knowledge have grown exponentially over the 20 years of service to the City of Cape May, West Cape May, and Cape May Point Boroughs, while she maintains a professional and dedicated demeanor. The police department has changed over the years, but Dorann has always quickly adapted to the growth and rapid changes from the government and the climate of the country as well.

Dorann is the direct supervisor for the records clerk staff, OPRA distribution clerk, Department’s Notary, FBI/NIBRS statistical reporting clerk, New Jersey State Police Firearms authorizations clerk as well as CMPD’s Body Cam and Axon Video discovery processing clerk, amongst the daily operation of the department, payroll, and employee management. These duties have been overwhelming to implement and required by the NJ Attorney General Guidelines. These roles, in conjunction with the new Concealed

Carry Permits that the Department issues, have increased the level of relative risk associated with Dorann’s responsibility.

“Our Police Department runs more efficiently with Dorann at our side”, says Police Chief Dekon Fashaw of his Confidential Assistant. “She’s my right arm.” Chief Fashaw says he relies on Dorann’s knowledge and proper guidance as she navigates his daily police and professional duties.

Commonly referred to as the Department’s “Mother Hen” and “Guiding Conscious”, Dorann helps to make sure the Department stays focused, humble, and professional. She is their “voice of reason” commonly telling the force “Just do the right thing”.

Dorann recently said, “I feel blessed to work among men and women who value their co-workers to the degree that we now experience.” The real blessing is Dorann and all that she brings to her co-workers. The City is honored to have such a dedicated and passionate employee and friend working for our community.

About Employee of the Month

In an effort to recognize the hard-working personnel of the City of Cape May, Manager Mike Voll launched a new city-wide recognition program to honor “employees of the month”. The objective is to recognize employees who show exemplary individual achievement, contribution, and performance in their jobs. These individuals consistently exhibit a positive and supportive attitude and make contributions beyond the usual expectations of their employment.

Peers can nominate each other, building a stronger comradery amongst the workforces. Management, Department Heads, and Supervisors are not eligible to be nominated, allowing recognition to solely focus on the hard-working City employees that make the City a success daily.

Under the authorization of the City Manager, the Employee of the Month Committee consists of voluntary Supervisors from each Department who will review nominations and select the winner for each month.
