DEP Unwilling to Work With South Jersey Communities?

By Kevin O'Hare, Villas

To the Editor:

I was reading the article about the homeowners in Avalon who removed protected vegetation around their home. While I agree that the city appears to have dragged its feet, I think it’s also worth mentioning that the state Department of Environmental Protection waited almost as long to raise the issue.

I can’t help but also think that there are a lot of examples of pretty big communication issues between the DEP and South Jersey Shore communities, like the Sportsmen’s Club at Sunset Beach in Cape May Point. Taken individually they may all be explainable, but collectively they paint a pretty bad picture of the DEP’s willingness to work with our communities.
